Hey all,
I am looking to play some Saturn games, but I am not sure where to start. I have looked at a few top games list but instead of just getting SEO or AI slop, hoping I can get some solid suggestions.

Genres I like: Action/Adventure, Racing, RPGs, Platformers/3D Platformers, Beat'em ups, Shoot'em ups.

Games I have to play already are Die Hard Arcade, Alien Trilogy, Sega Rally, Albert Odyssey, and Dragon Force.

I am playing on a Mister so, preferably stuff I can play on real hardware. I did not have a Saturn growing up, so I want to check out some of the best or even the just ok games it has. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

The Saturn is a special kind of treasure trove. A couple on my end.

Panzer Dragoon Saga
Magic Knight Rayearth
Linkle Liver Story (Japanese exclusive, but a fan translation exists)
Hyper Duel
Astal

There's also the compilation packs of Shoot-em-ups in Thunder Force (two volumes), Gradius, and Salamander.

My biggest recommendation would easily be Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru. Imagine Alien soldier but instead of Jim Henson monsters it’s Sengoku Japan with Yokai and stuff. Easily the most underrated Saturn game IMO and a must play if you love either Ninja Games or 2d run n guns

This looks awesome. Going to snag it tonight. Thank you!

Downloading Hyper Duel right now. Astal comes up a lot but I was not super into the art style, but maybe I will just get over that lol. When it comes to Magic Knight, would you recommend the "unworking designs" hack that is out there?

Here's a few shooters, Saturn has a lot of good ones.

If you go to download Mystaria and/or Blazing Heroes, they're the same game, it just got a title change for some reason I never learned. It's an okay tactical rpg, but it sure looks like an early 3D game, heh.

I'm probably not the right person to ask that, largely because I've never played those hacks on any of the Working Designs games, and I don't really mind the differences that had been made for all their games. Call it a guilty pleasure, I guess, lmao.
My favourite Saturn RPG: Shining the Holy Ark.
The fact I did not initially say this, combined with actually playing it a couple days ago to test if my own Saturn was still fine, gives me great shame. Excuse me while I scrub my brain.

Thunder Force V, 2/3 Ray games (they have weird naming schemes internationally so one may be named Layer Section and the other something else), Shienryu, Battle Garegga with an exclusive arrange ost, Donpachi, Dodonpachi, Metal Black, Darius Gaiden, and more when it comes to SHMUPs.

In fact I just remembered there’s hella installments to the Cotton franchise on Saturn

RPG library isn’t too shabby either. Shining Force III (internationally we only got a quarter of the game so also grab the fan translations of the extra scenarios), Shining Wisdom, Shining: The Holy Ark, Dark Savior, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (if you want to count Igavanias as half ARPG), Baroque, Princess Crown, Dragon Force and its fan translated sequel, Albert Odyssey, Linkle Liver Story, Lunar Silver Star Story, Grandia, Guardian Heroes, Magic Knight Rayearth, Sakura Wars, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner (currently untranslated), Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgement, Waku Waku Puyo Puyo Dungeon, etc

I view everything as action adventure I’m ngl, vague ass genre

Beat Em Ups? Scarce genre. One of your only answers is probably going to be Nekketsu Oyako and that’s an obscurity. There’s probably more that I don’t know about.

Platformers? I’m not super on the know on Saturn platformers but I do know of a few. Keio Flying Squadron (yes, the SEGA CD SHMUP) oddly enough has a sequel that’s pure 2D platformer. Don’t ask me why. There’s also Steamgear Mash and Astal. If it counts, Sonic 3D Blast has a Saturn remaster. Never played it but Elevator Action Returns got a slick ost. Clockwork Knight was an attempt by SEGA to have a platformer series too but it didn’t work out, has two games though. Bug! also has two games.

Completely missed it my first read but as for racing games:

-Daytona USA
-Gale Rider (aka Rad Mobile, aka the racing game known only for the fact that it had Sonic in it before Sonic was a thing)
-Code R, a racing game/dating sim. Currently untranslated, don’t recommend playing it yet. I hear the game itself is kinda shoddy but come on how many racing games have dating in it?
-Need for Speed
-Sega Rally Championship

D&D port is good, Crows is kind of neat. but ya, not a lot of beat em ups on the system.
