Lookin for JRPG emotional or fun story

You have to try chrono trigger for nintendo DS
Lookin for JRPG

I finished:
Earthbound
Mother 3
Lunar (PS1)

Emotional experience was worth it.
(prefer SNES, SATURN, GBA, PS1)
- Chrono and Mana (combat seemed too much energy for me atm).
- Live a Live not feeling it right now. I'll revisit these 3 games later.
(im new to rpgs)

Yoy have to try chrono Trigger for nintendo DS. Is friendly to new players, and one of the best stories and character designs ever

even older school, you could go with Emerald Dragon (most accessible is probably the super famicom one with english patch found right here) as it took its story pretty seriously with love/death etc and does it really well (again for the time)...
Would also second Emerald Dragon for the era of games you're looking for, interesting RPG for sure with well developed characters. It should be noted that the SNES version of the game is *very* easy, but that might be of benefit if you're looking more for story.
Lost Oddyssey is a very emotional story game, the main story but also the smaller stories spread throughout the millennial dreams of the immortal character Kaim. By the way, being immortal can sometimes be a bad thing. For Xbox 360.
Lost Oddyssey is also a fantastic and heavily emotional RPG, unfortunately stuck on the Xbox 360 (there is backwards compatibility with Xbox One). I haven't tried emulation for this title in particular, but X360 emulation is a thing nowadays, and does work well for some titles.

I would recommend:

Shin Megami Tensei If.. (SNES). It has many different scenarios that change slightly, the school ends up in hell and it focus on the emotional turmoil of the antagonist. It can be very emotional. If you like this one, you might want to pick Persona 1 (PSP). The original Persona 1 on the PSx got a botched translation in which they did a lot of editions and removed a very lengthy and important side-quest.
I would recommend Shin Megami Tensei I and 2, but they are those games that if you know what you are doing, it is easy, but if you don't you will suffer. I think SMTif is a more welcoming point, and Persona 1 is closer to SMT than to the later Persona titles.

Persona 2 Duology (PSP, PSx). Both games focus on the power of rumors that can spread and become reality, with fatal consequences. The first has a school rumor that if you make a ritual to an entity called Joker, your wishes will come true -- and in the second game, the JOKER will kill people you want destroyed. The first game focuses on the emotional journey of growing up and the expectations of high school, with some family drama. The second game has a young adult cast trying to figure out what it means to be an adult and their place in the world.

Grandia (PSx) it starts as a grand coming-of-age story, with a boy and his younger friend joining this cool girl in a grand adventure to the unknown...And then the game kicks you in the guts with a lot of emotions. It can be brutal in the emotional side.

Terranigma (SNES) is one of those games that deserves a little more recognition. It starts when the protagonist, Ark, opens a forbidden door in his village as part of a dare and everyone but him and the elder becomes frozen in time and he needs to go through dungeons to rescue everyone. But things escalate
and Ark gets exiled to the surface world, where he needs to terraform the world, culminating in a very emotional crescendo
. If you like Mother 3 you might enjoy the vibe of this one.

Something out of left field? Ihatovo Monogatari (SNES) doesn't have combat. It is a series of exploration, taking to people and doing quests that makes you reflect about life itself.

Everyone recommends Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI, but those are games that I personally have trouble connecting with. I would rather recommend Earthbound and Final Fantasy IV instead.

@MarioPartyN64

I wasn't going to say anything earlier because you specifically mentioned that you didnt want to play it at the moment but because someone else did I would like to second chrono trigger DS port. it has tons of quality of life and is the best game ever in my opinion. you could also buy the steam version

Are any English translations available out there?
There is an english script where all the text is translated (main story). If you play it together with the translation OCR, you can understand 99% of it.

But sadly no, still the translation patch is not out there, but I recall somebody was working on that since years ago.

Still worth checking out the later titles, a compendium of Growlanser II & III are available translated as Growlanser Generations for PS2 (Not to be confused with Growlanser V: Generations), Growlanser IV is available in English as well as Undubbed on PSP, Growlanser: Heritage of War is the fifth game and available in English or Undubbed on PS2, and Growlanser VI: Precarious World is available translated for PS2.

Yeah, it's a very underrated saga, but I still consider the PS1 game the best of all :)

I played the later games, but all I know of Growlanser 1 is that the protag is incredibly hot

Skies of Arcadia on Dreamcast
Baiten Kaitos on Gamecube
Blue Dragon on Xbox360

I found the plot in Secret of Evermore very fun and the game in general is just a great example of ARPG. Especially if you like Mana games.

The Repo hosts hacks for quick alchemy casting and 2nd player support, which makes it even more fun.

skies of arcadia is fantastic, but even though i really like blue dragon (on 360) i wouldnt say it has many emotional moments, maybe zola and the royal who loves her... i have the 2 baten kaitos games but havent gotten to them yet

Seems we have similar opinions! Haha

I do think Arcadia benefited quite a lot from Rieko Kodama's oversight; definitely one for OP to check out, especially with the streamlined experience in Game Cube vs the Dreamcast original release.

Either way, beautiful world and story to take in!
