Anyone play light gun games these days?
and how do you play them?!

i still have a G-con45, Time Crisis and PS1
BUT the old light guns wont work on modern LCD TV's and i cant find an old CRT anywhere..
so i got something called a Sinden Light Gun that works on LCD ::agree

It was kinda hard to get it into my country with our strict gun laws haha
i wasn't able to get black or grey so i got blue which is fine
there is even a "shotgun" form factor available but there is no way i could get that one in XD

Its not exactly plug & play but it works how it should straight out of the box on its own software
but the biggest trouble is getting it to work with emulators ::confused what a nightmare!

some of it is seriously off-putting, apparently for Pcsx2 you have to make AHK scripts to assign buttons to the gun
and retroarch wouldn't work if it was already installed before the guns software which confused me up for a long time & thats just some of the problems I've run into so far.. there is alot of "trial and error" involved and each game works differently so requires its own settings
but yeah once its working correctly its so fun! ::eyebrows

it works by putting a white boarder around your monitor and there is a camera inside the barrel of the gun so it can see where exactly to put the crosshair within the boarder. its surprisingly accurate as long as your in a dark room.

so what are your favorite light gun games? im a big fan of the Point Blank series :)

Take this with a massive grain of salt but I heard devices with a touch screen like steam deck or legion go can emulate light gun games.

yeah this device hijacks your mouse cursor but there is a touchpad option i saw somewhere in emulator settings so that sounds like it would work, i wonder if ps Vita could do it?
but touchscreen isn't the same as holding a plastic toy gun ::cool

That’s very true I forgot about that

i think touch screen would be cheating anyway :P
i remember i used to hold the gun right against the TV to hit the targets and that was cheating!
unfortunately that technique doesn't work with this gun because it cant focus that close XD

I did that as a kid too. That stupid dog always laughed.

While it takes a *very* particular version of MAME to run it, I tend to enjoy playing CarnEvil at least once or twice a year on PC. With how we rarely see the odd remake of Light Gun games made for modern consoles/pc, it saddens me knowing that one's basically long since been forgotten.

Kinda like Revolution X. Or Resident Evil Survivor (thanks, Capcom USA, for giving us a game that was MEANT to be used with a Light Gun...and then taking away the most crucial component from the gameplay due to not wanting bad press.)

CarnEvil that sounds fun :) ill grab it once i setup MAME. imo any game with a light gun is fun
even if the gfx are terrible. What happened to RE Survivor? I've noticed its one of the only games that i cant get working yet because i cant get past the menu? ><
there was another game i think "Death Crimson OX" only the Japanese version is compatible with a light gun so Eu & US versions are basically a broken game unless you wunna play with a controller which would suck.

I recently played The House of The Dead 3 on PS3, with a Playstation Move. Is not the best way to play it, compared to a light gun, but it works.
And the game was really good too, very replayable.

yeah House of the dead is classic ofc! im trying to play them in order 1,2,3 and there is one called HotD Overkill on Wii but haven't tried it yet 🧟

Basically, the long and the short of it is that RESurvivor had Light Gun support, but only in JP/PAL regions. Capcom USA had the functionality removed from the NTSC-U versions of the game due to the recent (at the time) Columbine incident...so it's played entirely with a controller.

seems like a silly reaction, maybe they should think about outlawing REAL guns 🤷
oh well i guess ill just try the JP version

Nah, Outlawing gun ownership is how you allow a dictatorship to take root.
But that is an entirely different can of worms that doesn't need to be opened here.

Yeah, you'd basically be better off working with the JP or PAL versions. Another Franchise spinoff you might wanna look into is Silent Hill: The Arcade. A far-cry from the story of a typical Silent Hill title, but a fun little rail shooter.

haha i fully agree!
i had no idea silent hill had a rail shooter thats awesome!
ill find it thanks 👍

I mainly want to play Snatcher with a light gun again, but I enjoy light gun games in general, and things like Gal Gun would be 100x more fun with a light gun.
I've wanted a Sinden for a long time now, but some of the "gun mice"-things seem like they might be a good compromise, since there's some low cost ones available, and something I could use easier, and on more games.
(This one is kinda making waves lately, but unfortunately I missed out on the super early bird pricing, because at $59 it would've been way easier to impulse buy and take a risk on: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ergostrike7-gun-mouse-with-fps-tailored-recoil#/ )

If you guys are interested in some of the less conventional options this guys channel might interest you: https://www.youtube.com/@Boojakascha

Yeah, I mean, they're definitely more of a novelty, and since some people don't even like things like rumble controllers, and might even hate the ergonomics, it will be hit or miss if people are gonna like it in general. But if you have a Sinden then you probably have about the best thing you can get, as far as gun grip/aiming/recoil immersion goes anyway.
I'm just glad we're getting different options for stuff like this, because TVs losing light gun compatibility really was a bummer.

looking at it again closely, it looks like a novelty as there is no way to aim with the barrel it would only register the mouse movements so its basically just a gun shaped mouse XD

i didn't get the sinden recoil version because it was an extra $100 ><
and im happy i didn't because its a single cable USB and it uses alot of power
its already blown a USB port & the recoil version would require even more juice
plus recoil would kill my wrists lol

Yeah, that's the one I want, and it makes sense if it's high quality, but it makes it definitely makes things harder on a brokeass, such as myself :p

Someday I'll get a SinDen light gun...

On another hand I've also liked playing House of the Dead Scarlet Dawn and 4 on the actual arcade cabinet.

I wish I had easier access to the first two and even playing Time Crisis (I played that one Cobra one using the same engine as TC2).

And the game was really good too, very replayable.
I often hear it's the weakest but while I don't dislike it it's not the one I'd replay the most, 4 is above in my list.
