Post and discuss games that falls under these terms:

  1. The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose.
  2. The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
  3. The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others.
  4. The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others. By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

This includes even rights to sell the copies of the game, provided you don't place limitations on others on what they can do with them. So games where the source code is available but doesn't follow all of these such as Spelunky Classic doesn't count.

Not sure if they tick all the boxes but there's many like this on itch.io. Can't pick one that stands out though, maybe Momodora.?
This doesn't seem to tick any of them 😅

I made this thread specifically for games that at the very least have their source code available, attached to a license that gives people freedom to do whatever they want with it.

That aside, this is a interesting game recommendation. I feel like trying it for myself sometime.

Seems what you had in mind was the Freeware games thread.

Apparently this used to cost back in the day but since then the devs made it and the 70ish asset packs free (excluding a couple because the original artists were stingy). As far as game maker engines goes it's complete shit but stumbling across this when I was small had a massive hand in forming my appreciation for game development. As well there used to be a bit of a community surrounding this engine with some popular mods including the Black Ice multiplayer mod (might have botched the name).

For a kid's first encounter with proper game dev this engine is actually pretty sick.

Oh and as well there's M.U.G.E.N
If you like fighting games or like any character from anything ever I'm sure you can find some enjoyment in M.U.G.E.N. Even gamblers love it because of Salty Bet

Btw, awesome thread, OP. I only clicked on to see what it was but this is actually a super cool list to have so sorry if these don't count and I messed it up

There is also BAR, which can make a Supcom hater like me play it, but its mostly Multiplayer focused.
