I just played Ranger X off a recommendation from SEGA Lord X and… my goodness it’s beautiful. It’s almost EXACTLY the kind of game that I think of when I think of the Mega Drive.
The pitch is this: you are a mech, named Ranger X. Against you is a robotic army of terror, but with you is a battle platform that at any time you can land on and combine with to become a mobile battle tank. As Ranger X, you can fly with a Jetpack (though it will overheat, so keep that in mind), and you can move and shoot alongside your platform. Go forth and protect a world that’s a mix of old school euro-style fantasy and Japanese mecha stylings!
It’s just a really cool game. Great use of FM Synth for the music too. And very pretty graphically. It does a lot with background parallax and faux-sprite scaling that look really good. It’s just a tour dé force of everything the Genesis can do!
