The reason for this post is because i find that the term fan translation is In my opinion, a bit too narrow and vague to apply not just video games but also anime, film, tv shows, manga, literature, and music, and it's a bit more technical, i suggest that we should coin a new term for fan translated video games, give me your word coinage and meaning of the term, that would be catchy to remember, but has technical depth that could actually make sense to what it means, and works as an academic term

My suggestion is: Softlation (Portmanteau of Software And Video games), because most of the games were made as software and they can be translated in different ways unofficially, distributed, created and done by fans or communities, it also a bit precise and catchy because of the pronounciation and accurate because of the nature of fan translations in video games

I don't understand the need for anything more specific or technical. These are literally translations made by fans regardless of the context or media type.

But just for fun: Fanslations

Fan + Translations

What is it? A translation.
Done by who? (arguably) By fans.
Do we need more information? Not really.

I think the term is serviceable as is. It's succinct, direct, everyone knows what you're talking about, the common Joe doesn't need to know (nor cares) how it was done (just that it's a "non-official translation"), it's a "catch all term" (no need to have "softlation" "anilation" "booklation", "cinelation", etc), context provides all the info you need like if you're talking about a "game fan-translation", an "anime fan-translation", a "manga fan-traslation", and it's already super common.

But to indulge in the topic: Non-Official Translation. It's more "technically in-depth" (it's not officially endorsed, shared, created nor distributed) and works as an academic term (since you can argue if a translation either is made by fans, or just people paid to do it or people who don't care about the media but just take pleasure in translating stuff).

What's wrong with "fan translation"? I think it gets the point across that it's not official, but a passion project by diehard fans just fine.

Personally edited language fix for the homies

You see, the language has been fixed and the homies can now read it. I think this fits much better

Manga fan translations are commonly referred to as "scanlations", maybe that's why OP thinks games should have their own term. I don't know, I'm used to scanlation but "softlation" or "gameslations" or whatever just sound dumb to me.

Probably not a serious post, I assume, but I guarantee convention isn't changing.

Graphically Retroactively Gramatically Converted

I thought we already had "fanlation" at home? You can use it for anything translated by fans!!! ::thumbsupwario

What about FanTran Game for Fan Translated game or FanTraGa ;) just some words I came up with

No

I'm sick of people changing our language all the time.
Yes. Ah I wish to be able to speak in da real English again when da English had such a character back then like "To the abyss with thee! A pox upon thy spleen! Thou art a bag of dross. Thy words are but mere filth, and well thou know’st it. Hark ye! Nay, I will not tarry! Tush! Keep thy cursed offering to thyself! I spit upon thee for thy most ill contraptions! Thou art a fool, and wherefore thou dost lie like a worm-bucket! Fare thee well to the hereafter!!!" (I played Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption and Breath of Fire 4 a lot) lolol.
