Lego Racers 2 was first released in 2001 and was available for Microsoft Windows and the PlayStation 2. The game allowed both custom and pre-existing LEGO creations for your minifigure and racing vehicle. The main gameplay categories were Adventure Mode, Arcade Mode, and Multiplayer mode. The game had five worlds of Sandy Bay, Dino Island, Mars, the Arctic, and Xalax.
Adventure Mode starts you off in the world of Sandy Bay. Sandy Bay is a small island consisting of beaches, a small town, and various LEGO creations dotted across the island. You start off with the basic tutorial and cutscenes. You race various Sandy Bay residents, such as: Workman Fred, Mike the Postman, Fireman Gavin, and finally P.C. Bobby. You compete in races to win gold bricks and gold bricks can also be found scattered across the island. Once you have enough gold bricks, you can unlock other LEGO worlds to visit. The final boss is Rocket Racer in the Xalax world. You can find additional bonus games across the worlds, which provide car upgrades.
Arcade Mode allows you to immediately jump straight into 1 or 2 player single races, or bonus games. Any tracks that you have unlocked and explored in the main Adventure Mode will be available to play on in Arcade Mode. Multiplayer mode allows 2 players to race each other on any unlocked tracks. The Microsoft Windows version of the game allows both keyboard & mouse support, along with joystick support for player 2. This means that a host could use their Windows keyboard and mouse, whilst another player uses a PlayStation 4 controller in 2 player races. The PlayStation 2 console also offers 2 player races as well.
The major advantage of the Microsoft Windows version of the game is that you can modify the game. I have improved the game visually with texture improvement mods, as well as widescreen modification solutions. The game does not look too bad for a game released back in the year 2001! The PlayStation 2 version is probably the most 2 player local couch Multiplayer friendly, but that version has hardware limitations, such as shorter visible draw distance.
One disappointment has been the game has a maximum of 2 player Multiplayer races. I would of absolutely loved to have more than 2 players all racing at the same time, it would have been a blast! The split-screen method may have became messy though. It has also been disappointing that the game never included Multiplayer over the internet. That is why I have always dreamed about an unofficial fan remake of the game, accommodating such features. I know LEGO would never officially release such remake of such an old game of old LEGO sets and creations.
Many old school LEGO fans have also been interested in the original Lego Racers. I started off with Lego Racers 2 and much preferred the open world environment, over the original. I also know of the modern-day LEGO 2K Drive, but this does not hold the same nostalgia and charm as the old school classics. I absolutely love the old school LEGO creations and vehicles, usually of 4 studs wide. The forum of Rock Raiders United was the best place for old school LEGO videogames, but that forum has since become archived and discontinued.
Have you played the old school game? What are your thoughts of Lego Racers 2? Do you have any modification suggestions?
