So I started playing legend of Caocao today, a koei game from 1998.

To be honest, I'm kind of blown away with how accurate it is following the romance of the three kingdoms plotline. Mind you, I only ever watched the 2010 Three Kingdoms adaptation, but still.

Basically it's fire emblem, but Chinese and windows 95 era.

If I have any complaints, it's the fact that it seems to be locked to windowed mode, and I cannot figure out for the life of me how to make it full screen.

So yeah, like the thread says, what do you guys think about this game?

I saw there was apparently a modernized version that came out in 2019, but I only found out about that when Google searching screenshots from the game.

Personally? I think it's a really neat novelty. If only my monitor was smaller resolution so it would be bigger. 😅 It's really tiny on my modern laptop.

Koei's entire specialty before the Musou series was making historical strategy or sim games. They had a Romance of the Three Kingdoms series, the Nobunaga's Ambition series, and even Uncharted Waters about the age of discovery. I'm pretty sure those were mostly accurate in general. So I'm not too surprised this one is. It looks more my style though, maybe I should try it.

Never knew this game got a fan translation

Pissed me to no end the fact that Koei has all their old ROTK/Nobunaga games and spin offs on steam, but not a single one with english

Judging by the interface it was most likely never intended to be played full screen and never supported that option to begin with. That was actually somewhat common in Windows 95 games.

Ahaha, I know right? I was looking at getting into some of the older games, ones with better interfaces then the snes versions, and while they sell them, it's just not worth the time.

Also, what in the hell is up with their prices? They way overcharge for the newer games.

Ah, that makes alot of sense. Welp, I guess I'll be playing it in the tiny window, or maybe having my pc change resolution when booting it up. 😅

Oh btw, while playing I kept choosing the historical accurate choices that Tsao Tsao actually made and the red/blue gauge kept shifting more to the red. I think it's a mechanic that judges chaos vs order, although I'm not 100% certain on that. I wonder what would happen if I chose the other options now, would it unlock different missions later on?
