"Spongebob" is a show that needs no introduction. It's one of the biggest cult phenomenons in the entire world spawning over 14(?) seasons, multiple movies, and two spinoff shows across a 26 year span. And despite it being a show aimed at children, it tackled a lot of mature (and sometimes depressing) themes that resonate with adults.
I, like most others, have a fondness for the show's first 3 seasons as well as the 2004 movie. They all had great writing, humorous dialogue and surrounded you with a lively cast of characters. They also spawned WAY too many memes to count and I regularly quote some of my favorite lines from these episodes.
However, most fans generally agree that the show's quality began to drop after the first movie (especially in season 6). For the most part, I can agree that the show isn't quite as good as it used to be. Every character became one-note, some go completely out of character (I'm looking at YOU, "A Pal for Gary"!), a vast majority of episodes revolve a character (especially Squidward) suffering for no particular reason other than the initiators getting a sick thrill out of it, poor attempts at gross-out humor, and some episodes are just pre-movie episodes done worse like "Have You Seen This Snail" being a worse version of "Dumped". But I personally feel that season 5 was the beginning of the "dark age". While season 4 is kinda hit-or-miss, I can't recall a single episode from seasons 5 and up that I enjoyed watching both as a kid and now as an adult in my early 20s.
The last time I watched Spongebob was during its 11th season. As a result, I haven't seen "Kamp Koral", "The Patrick Star Show", seasons 12-14 (or whatever season the show's currently on lol) and any movie that came out after (the surprisingly decent) "Sponge Out of Water".
I felt inspired to write this post after watching several different YouTube videos covering the show's fall from grace within the past couple of weeks. As I watched them, I kept thinking to myself "Yeah, I can definitely see why everyone hates this episode" or "Man... I always hated this episode as a kid, but now I hate it even more because [X reason(s)]".
