Favorite genre other than Fighting games?

Hard to pick one specifically. I play the hell out of Resident Evil, though.
I also dig classic Tomb Raider, Crash Team Racing (and the first 3 games of course), Tenchu 2 was also my jam back in the day, been getting into a lot of classic Doom as of late (which I had to stop thanks to the recent remaster's several crashes), Devil May Cry in small doses, etc.

Favorite ps2 game?

I'm a bit of a moron when it comes to RPGs, sadly. xD Whether it's Japanese or western.
I did beat FF6 and FF7 twice each a few years ago, but after that I kinda realized the genre isn't really for me. It felt kinda repetitive and the shortest RPGs around were like 20 hours or something, and that's if you were quick, so I kinda stopped playing them over time.

you can just pick whichever one that you think is the cutest or coolest. that's how everyone makes this decision. i like turtles, so i picked squirtle.

In spite of myself, it's Tekken Tag Tournament. Even if I don't like the series today, this game is still amazing. It was my first true exposure to this generation of games and it featured everything I enjoyed in the past three PS1 games. But other than that, maaaaaybe King of Fighters XI. It helps that I didn't sour on KOF over the years. xD

TTT1 was incredible, nice choice!

Guess I'd go with Rowlet. He looks like my old lamp. xD

What's your favorite kusoge fighting game, and why?

Also, what are your thoughts on Fatal Fury's latest fighter reveals?

As for the kusoges, it's a tie between Dong Dong Never Die and SVC Chaos: SNK vs Capcom.

They're both unapologetically broken, but loads of fun. Plus I like the idea of SNK doing a crossover this time, the Capcom characters look kinda cool.

As far as the guest reveals go, this is a little more complex.

I was always of the belief that if you're not Mortal Kombat, don't try guest characters.
This was a MASSIVELY embarrassing week for fighting games in general, Tekken 8 burying itself with Season 2, SF6 not addressing the throw loops, and Garou announcing some friend of the Saudi prince as a guest character, things have not been going well.
Ronaldo was weird, sure, but we all accepted that it was a case of "yeah, the Saudi prince owns a team Ronaldo is in so he's putting him in there", but shit, at least people know who Ronaldo is. Who the hell is Salvatore Ganacci? Turns out it's some DJ the Saudi prince likes. At least Fred Durst in Smackdown Just Bring It had SOME degree of context.

But yeah, if you're not Mortal Kombat, don't do guest characters, lol.

You and I are on the same wavelength there for sure. I don't have too much of an interest in any of the modern fighters, if I'm being honest. SF6 I enjoyed for a short while, but I don't love the system mechanics. T8's latest patch is a head scratcher; I'm not a 3D fighting game player really, but the community seems to be quite upset at the moment.

As for a different question - what did you think of MVCI and Dragon Ball Fighterz? Did you think DBFZ was a suitable replacement to Marvel at the time? I know you already mentioned that you don't really care for anime fighters, but DBFZ is more Marvel-esque than most of the others.

Personally speaking, I actually enjoyed MVCI quite a bit more than DBFZ, graphics and roster be damned.

I never liked Dragon Ball, so I'd be lying if I said I checked a single thing about it, lol.

As for T8, I already dropped out of the series a few games before, but this game managed to make every single wrong choice possible, and now that S2 is out, they're all noticing it. Goes to show you when "Don't ask me for shit" goes too far, I guess.

As for MVCI, I didn't hate it either. The core gameplay is actually alright. If anything, this game needed more of a roster mod than MVC3 did. But sadly the roster and visuals do matter in the end. Sure, KOF XIV wasn't just ugly, the gameplay was also boring and unimpressive. MVCI had some sauce in it as far as gameplay goes, but sadly it was buried by everything else.

Apologies regarding the "Certainly Never Been Done Before Ever Online" Goku pfp, in this case. Goku's not even my favorite character, but Dragon Ball is a series that I have a great affinity towards. Dragon Ball before Super, anyway.

Yeah... the whole rage system of T7 and the heat mechanics of T8 aren't really for me. T8 looks like "hyper aggression: The Game", at least as an outsider looking in. T7 had some very good EVO years, however.

It's a shame, isn't it? Ultron, Jedah, Thanos, the Hunter, the list goes on and on; there are some very fun characters in MVCI. I definitely agree regarding roster and visuals - the active switch gameplay felt even better than traditional assists, in my opinion. The stones needed more fine tuning. Space and Reality stones were a tad too strong compared to the others.

The fighting questions continue! Do you have any KOF characters that you want to see in Fatal Fury? I am a fan of Krohnen and Nameless, both gameplay and aesthetics wise. I really enjoyed seeing K9999 return again in some form after such a long absence, but I hope he returns in future titles in the base rosters.

Active switch > assist mechanics.

As for KOF chars in Fatal Fury... not really. I mean, it already plays like KOF as a basis, except for short hops and rolls, so why include them? This is where I would say "some Fatal Fury characters in Fatal Fury would be neat", problem is that they already announced Ken and Chun-Li before even revealing the base roster, not to mention Ronaldo and the Maximilian Dood body double, lol. Andy and Joe, who by all means are main characters will be DLC, so my expectations are severely low.

4 whole characters on the base roster being guest characters is truly criminal. The non-functioning UI seen in the beta is also doing COTW no favors as well. I don't have high expectations, either.

What characters give you the most trouble to fight against? Ken is a troublesome character for me, no matter the game. His rushdown game can be downright suffocating at times. For how frequent he's seen online, you'd think I'd have the matchup down to a T by now. Nope.

Also, favorite mechanic in a game?

Ken and Chun-Li are DLC, so just two base guests.

As for characters who give me trouble, really depends on the game. In SF4 it's SOME people as Juri, in SVC Chaos it's Orochi Iori, in MVC3 is Amaterasu, in MK9 MAYBE Ermac?

You mentioned Ken, and sure, he's very annoying in some games, but in SVC he's a non factor, lol. Also due to the fact I play very little online, I decided to mention some separate cases, otherwise it would be me just mentioning bosses, lol.

As for mechanics, I love the Shift system in KOF XI, super cancels in Street Fighter EX, Strikers in KOF 2000, the Grooves in CVS2, MK9's system in general, lots to choose from.

I'll ask one more question for now, as otherwise I could quite literally ask more questions until it's next December - what got you interested in fighting games? You mentioned that you really started playing through SF EX2+, but what made you end up playing the genre to begin with? And do your IRL friends enjoy playing them?

Personally speaking, my friends couldn't care less about the genre, unfortunately. The characters and pixel art of the early Street Fighter games was what drew me into the genre.

Ken and Chun-Li are DLC, so just two base guests.
Also, I appreciate the clarification. I'll just blame Chun-Li's SA2 for making me give the wrong information, since the super is currently living rent-free in my head.

Nah I don't mind more questions, that's what the thread is for! xD Alternatively, y'all can message me anytime.

I can't really remember what got me into them in the first place, my first games were eithet Tekken 3 or KOF 99, I liked how they looked, how they played, the characters (to a degree), it just resonated with me super well.

As for my friends at the time, we played TONS of fighting games. CVS2, 98UM, 2002UM, Tekken Tag 1, DOA2, Alpha 3, EX2 Plus, SVC Chaos, Marvel vs Capcom 2, MK Trilogy, you name it. I can't tell for when they played it outside of our circle, but whenever we were together, we always had a blast playing fighting games over everything else. Some years later some online friends of mine put together a little USF4 "tournament" of sorts, which I ended up winning, lol.

What fighting game would you recommend to someone who's never played a fighting game in their life?

This is a very difficult question, actually. First impressions can make or break a person's interest in the genre.

If we're talking historical value, Street Fighter 2. It introduced so many things and set the standard for fighting games to this very day. It's not super polished or balanced, but this is stuff for people to learn later on. You're not gonna get a first time player on SF4 and teach them FADCs straight out the gate.

If we're talking 3D fighters, probably Tekken 3 or Tag 1. My thoughts about the franchise nowadays notwithstanding, they are the best 3D fighters out there, and while they take a while to master, they're not the hardest games to get into.

Could include other games like MK2, UMK3, even Street Fighter IV, there's lots of possible choices.
