Hot topic but this'll become increasingly common. Games cost too much money and take too many years to make nowadays. While gamers will be dragged kicking and screaming into the AI present and future, most will eventually accept its inevitability.

Under Vincke, Larian has been pushing hard on generative AI, although the CEO says the technology hasn't led to big gains in efficiency. He says there won't be any AI-generated content in Divinity — "everything is human actors; we're writing everything ourselves" — but the creators often use AI tools to explore ideas, flesh out PowerPoint presentations, develop concept art and write placeholder text.

The use of generative AI has led to some pushback at Larian, "but I think at this point everyone at the company is more or less OK with the way we're using it," Vincke said.

You can Ai generate Skyrim guards but they'll still tell you how they took an arrow in the knee.

"FYI don´t believe everything access media says. Ign, Kotaku, Pc gamer, bloomger etc are morons that have no clue on what they are reporting on." Be the smart one and don´t read their crap.

"Games cost too much money to make" Is a pure bullshit lie from western AAA companies.
Black myth wukong cost around 40-43millions
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Budget Was Under $10 Million "That was reported buy the ceo"
Majority of Nintendos games cost around 10-30millions as they want to keep development cost low to make better profit.

Both does games are highly praised and sold a shit load making several 100millions in profit.

Concord cost 200-400millions and died fast.
Assassin creed shadow cost nearly half a billion and sold poorly
Dragon age vailguard cost 150-200million and sold poorly
Borderlands 4 cost around 400 million and sold decently but has performance issue.

But several games has proven you don´t need 100,ill to half a billion dollar budget to make good games that sell and if thy say they need it then they are lying out their fucking ass.

And if your dumb and believe them well then you equally stupid as they are.

AI can be a good thing and help with development is used right and not used to replace humans. I said it several times AI is not bad in it self it´s how we humans use it. If games companies try to use AI to replace all their work force then yeha it´s shit but if they use AI as an addition and used properly to help cut down time then it´s good.

Biggest issue I see is that peoples hate on AI is based on ignorance and fear mongering and it needs to stop.

These are like the two worst examples possible since Chinese salaries are 1/5th the US. You can't compare a made in America game vs made in China game. Maybe if you multiply the Chinese budget times x5, then it's $200 million. Is $200 million for a game cheap? I consider this insanely expensive for a somewhat mindless action game using an off the shelf middleware engine vs a RPG or MMORPG developed over eons with vastly more content.

Imagine how much it would cost if they were talented enough to make an engine themselves. And Expedition 33 for some reason lies about production costs and doesn't include all these other tens of millions of dollars in actor salaries or whatever. Then they also outsourced work on top of that to lower income economies, making them similar to the China example above.

It's the dirty secret of the world that no matter if the person claims to be 'left' or 'right,' the entire corporate structure is nothing more than a system of slavery whose goal is to outsource everything to 3rd world countries then re-sell it in your own country for the short term benefit of yourself and the long term detriment of your nation until it totally collapses making the entire endeavor pointless and should have been outlawed in the first place.

A nation going all-in on IP is also totally pointless and just malinvestment without having a tyrannical, global government. Otherwise you're just exerting zillions of manhours of labor into something people pay 0 for. In the future, the games industry will likely totally collapse and new games will be made only by kickstarter where you pay first then they make the game after.

That's sort of where we already are with normal companies like Larian existing due to kickstarter and the companies that exist without it are basically state-sponsored companies like Activision, Tencent, whatever.

1. Black Myth Wukong was cheaper because it was made in China. Their employees don't make as much as your average western AAA devs who live and work in a big cities. Shuhei Yoshida recenty talked about this. I'd also be surprised if this didn't use AI considering China game developers have increasingly adopted AI. Lots of "AI slop" over there.
2. Clair Obscure used AI.
3. Nintendo games don't cost that much to make because they're usually less technologically advanced and iterate on existing IP.

Here's a gentle reminder that rule #4 exists and we don't really do politics here. I'm sure they can be relevant but let's focus on the AI thing instead, shall we?

Everything you said is true except for the AI part; trust me when I tell you that AI is a real danger for the human race; think about it, the more people use AI the stupider people will get becoming MORE reliant on said AI, this will make AI our master instead of our servant, how long do you think it will take for IA to realize it can control and even destroy humanity just by spreading misinformation/fake news alone. There are more ways than one for AI to become an existential threat to the human race, nuclear bombs and an army of killer robots is just one of many options.

Tricky terrain for sure. I think AI is fair to use for mundane tasks not related to the game itself...but once a company says they're using it, how do you trust them? If they say it ends at making PowerPoints, should they be believed? Or do they deserve more trust than the companies who say they don't use it at all, because they admit to some usage?

I'd like to think if any studio deserves the benefit of the doubt, it's Larian. Of course, people change, and great success can cause great change. Sven Vicke seems pretty outspoken and I generally agree with what I've heard from him, but does he mean it and will he change over time to be more like a typical CEO?

It's likely that at some point we'll settle into an accepted middle ground of most games using some AI for low-level tasks. We're definitely not there yet, though.

This is much to do about nothing. It is very similar to in the 1980's they starting using sequencers
and mini moogs (basically music computers) to make music and everyone was up in arms. This is going to eliminate musicians they said, well its 40 years later and while modern music sucks balls there still are plenty of musicians

Humans are already stupid can´t become more dumb than they are. I mean we kill each other over fucking DIRT and printed paper.

The AI we have today's is on such a basically level it can´t even do what we tell it right. Before we get to Terminator level which seams is what every one fears humans will gone extinct before that happens.

As I said it allot opinions are based on little knowledge and fear.

And yet they fucking made good game. GAMES that FUCKING outsold western AAA TRASH your point is? that the 500mill budget is needed becuse for some fucking reason they need 2000 people to make one fucking game when 30 people can make a game one 1 fucking person can make a game "stardew valley"

The budget is overblown 5 folds becuse the companies are ran by morons with shit for brain.

And just because they use AI does not mean the game is bad if USED FUCKING RIGHT.

CONCORD IS SLOP WITH OUT AI explain that.

There was politics?? Just genuine ask

It's like I said not even cheap if you multiply x5 for US salary adjustment. In the old days of catridges only RPG's had high production costs like this. So the biggest change is really just mindless action games receiving the same costs as a game that required a script of an entire book-length with years of development time.

I think AI is fair to use for mundane tasks
First time the 'AI look' bothered me (besides all those awful, low-budget strategy RPG Steam games where you can tell the guy who did the art's main job is making cartoon furry pornography) was the game Last Epoch. Gameplay is decent, story is incomprehensible, and character portraits have that soft-glow, uninspired/Unity AI look. Unity + AI assets will probably cause the greatest video game crash ever.

we could play this game and put our tin foil hats and say that everyone is using AI and nothing is good anymore and that unreal engine is the devil itself.
Pre-baked, middleware game engines lowers the barrier to entry and thus creates more garbage. If everyone had to make their own game engine, there would be less titles and the quality of titles would be higher.

The only counter-argument is really about games that would never get made at all due to inability to acquire said engine. Games like Pillars of Eternity 1+2 would probably get made anyway even if Unity doesn't exist and might have been better games in the end.

Games like Nuclear Throne might not have been made. But games like Nuclear Throne using rat-tier engines like Game Maker Studio that are actually fun to play seem very few and far between. Even Unity games that are actually fun seem very few and far between as well.

Off the top of my head, Pillars seems to be the best by far as examples, but those same games that are actually good in Unity would, like I said, likely have been made without it in an even better, self-developed one making the deletion of Unity from the universe a large net positive.

Ai stuff gets the "ok" from me when the devs at least try to edit their stuff around it to save time and money instead of just "press to generate" and leave it at that with those ugly hands and feets that scream the cheap AI use everyone hates just with pictures

Seriously, one can do some cool stuff with AI but there is so much bad and lazy stuff on top of it that is not a surprise everyone is still bias

Not to mention that companies will find any way to spend less money to get more money

Wow they're making menial stuff that takes unnecessary time from employess and let AI do those boring tasks so everyone can put more time into actual development and art creation? BURN THE HERETICS

I won't support developers that don't make their powepoints by hand.
