Saturn Just got a Sega Saturn! First time ownership thread.

It's technically imperfect because it isn't an original anyway?
So, I finally am taking the time to respond here. There’s a little damage, but my bigger issue is the giant P that the previous owner put on it in permanent marker.

This is… a little annoying. Shame too, since everything else about this copy (aside from the disc) is in lovely shape for a U.S. game.

Games found here in the U.S. are usually in pretty poor shape, and/or are loose. Many folks don’t take very good care of their games here, sadly.

When you're talking about 30 year-old items that originally shipped in what might be the most fragile packaging ever, that doesn't look too bad. I had new copies of stuff in the 90s that shipped to the store in cases that had cracks or broken hinges. You might be able to remove that P without damaging the cover with rubbing alcohol if you're really careful. Not sure about the disc itself, though.

I just took the time to go through the arcade mode of X-Men V.S. Street Fighter tonight. Apocalypse is some nonsense, but it’s all really a matter of getting over onto his right side, smashing drones before they can hit you, and heavy sweep spamming when you have downtime (or aiming for the head if you’re playing Storm). I was super excited to see the battle between both of your player characters at the very end of the game, as that had never been spoiled for me!

The team I used for my run was Ken with color 1 and Zangief with color 3 for most of my run. But, with Apocalypse being so powerful, Ken teamed up with Storm (color 1) to beat him, before beating her and getting his ending.

Ken has a PlayStation. I’m playing on a Saturn. This feels like a slap in the face.

Taking a second look, it seems like it’s a fusion of the PS1 and Saturn, with the large cartridge sticking out the top.

It’s been a long time since I updated this thread. That’s no accident: it’s been a couple months since I got anything new for Saturn. I don’t know if I ever mentioned that I got a Stunner, and it wasn’t cheap. $50 for a toy gun really is frustrating in how expensive it is, but it could always be worse.

I’ve been buying less games recently and spending primarily on the important stuff. Today though, I’m feeling more fluid, and I intend to walk to my local used game store in the middle of my school day. I played X-Men vs Street Fighter again this morning, and I had a ton of fun! Didn’t finish an arcade run, but it was a cool thing to do for 20 minutes before I had to run and catch the bus to my campus. That said, I had the Saturn freak out on me! It was loading and it had a moment where it completely collapsed on me. I think this new apartment’s wiring is more temperamental than my old place. It’s also possible it’s other factors, like my messy setup or the fact that I don’t use a voltage converter. I had it on good word from SEGA Lord X that the Saturn’s power supply can handle the extra voltage, and he’s had Saturn’s since its launch in 94. That said, I should look into getting a proper power converter just to be safe.

I'm not sure where you're at OP, but do you have to use a stepdown thing for the power cable? I don't know if that would cause issues with the CD drive but I suppose it's possible? I only had import PS2s but always used one because people said it was a way to avoid frying an entire system.
Last I checked, Sega Lord X isn't an electrician. ::thinking

It's always good to take the extra steps even if they seem unnecessary. I hope your system turns out as being okay and it was just a freak occurrence.

You will have fun with this console, It had some great exclusive games.

I am playing Guardians Heroes at the moment, btw.

So, time for a HUGE update!

I already said it, but I got a Saturn Stunner. Love the color and design of it! It’s my second ever light gun, after the Master System Phaser (does the Wiimote count as a light gun too?) and I haven’t given it too much play so far. I guarantee to dedicate a good amount of time to the Virtua Cop games soon though!

Who said you need to spend a fortune to have a fun shmup on Saturn? Layer Section was an absolutely INCREDIBLE purchase, and has now become one of my go-to games for the system. I love it… so much. A cool vertical shooter that uses parallax layers as a main gameplay mechanic, kinda like Xevious, but WAYYYY faster and more dynamic. Also has great music.

Christmas NiGHTS! I never splurged on it before, despite it being so cheap and renound, because I didn’t want to pay import fees if I didn’t have to. It was a birthday gift to me this year! And what a gift it was, as my aunt SOMEHOW found a new-old-stock copy. That means this guy is as mint as it can be without actually being a sealed game! A fun platformer-adjacent title with tons of secrets, clock based mysteries, and holiday cheer!
IMG_7152.jpeg

Finally: STREET FIGHTER COLLECTION! I’ve wanted more fighters on Saturn, and I wanted Alpha 2 so bad. However, I saw this gem at a local used game store. And it was less than the online prices I’ve seen! For that price, I couldn’t say no!

With all that covered, HERE is my current Saturn collection, including all controllers, games, and peripherals.

I followed my dreams of Saturn, and a little money here and there went a long way.

I followed my dreams of Saturn, and a little money here and there went a long way.
Christmas Nights is really fun!

What's the update on the electrical issues? Anything there?
None since then. I’ve been keeping an eye on my system, so I’ll update the thread if anything happens.

It’s also possible the power plug wasn’t secure, due to my older setup.

So, legitimately, my only gaming intention this week was to get a Famicom. I had it ordered and it was coming, but I decided to make a little stop by my local used game store anyway. It hadn’t given me anything new and exciting in a while, so what could be the harm?

I talk to the guy up front and he shows me a Dreamcast dev unit, before I see out of the corner of my eye THIS GAME in storage:
IMG_7423.jpeg

And there it was. I shelled out the dough, definitely a questionable purchase and I WILL be taking it easy after this, but I was still able to walk away with this game.

With it in hand, I now own every Sonic title on the Saturn. The Saturn isn’t a Sonic place, I know it’s not and I’m okay with that, but I do like my blue blur and so having all these is certainly exciting to me. Doubly so since these games have always seemed so mystical. Sonic Jam is hyped up, Sonic R is only ever the PC version when people play it, and 3D Blast is always the Genesis version. And it’s not an amazing game, no, and it’s not a good Sonic game, but I was surprised to find last night when I played it that I felt it was a fun GAME. I chose to focus less on the “Sonic” and more on the “The Hedgehog”, which led to me having a fairly good time for a fair couple of hours. The special stages had a lot to do with it, being these fast and fun moments in between the slower and more chill exploration. Easily the best halfpipe style special stages I’ve ever played, and I’ve played just about all of them at this point, so make of that what you will.
Another thing that really was making me happy was the music, which I absolutely adore and cannot express how much I love listening to it. The game was supremely calming to play for a good bit there, and aesthetically it was pleasing to me as somebody who loves pre-rendered stuff a lot. Again, not amazing, but it was fun to me and I can see myself going back and having a good time.
IMG_7424.jpeg

I actually got TWO Saturn games that day, but Tomb Raider’s case broke. I also had less of a good time with it, so I’m debating whether or not to bring it back and instead get Blazing Dragons (another game that I wanted).
I think I’ll give Laura another chance to impress me. I want to be fair!

Nice Saturn collection! My Saturn was actually given to me for free with the box by my science teacher back in June '23 just before summer break. Left earlier this year after repeating just Maths and English for another year and I'm still missing him. Probably the best teacher I've had.

Anyways, if need be I'll leave you be for the time being. I need to go now, my planet needs me.

Today I saw the golden Saturn.

As well as a “greatest hits” of some of the system’s rarest.

Christmas came in hard and came in fast. This wasn’t a gift, just a find during the season. Some local game store was selling it at about half its standard price. Still expensive, but my partner bit the bullet, and I couldn’t be happier.

I’ve gotten acquainted with the Satiator now. I’ve been doing tests, making sure it all works, and configuring. I’ve been able to play Dragonforce and Magic Knight Rayearth.
Finally, I can play all the games that everybody recommends on RGT, as well as fan translations and homebrew.

I’ve been thinking about getting an aftermarket power supply for the Saturn too. I can’t afford to do that for all my game systems, but the Saturn is a special case.
