I don't see any comments of the CFW processes for PSP on here so I thought I might see if there are any prevailing opinions on what's cool and what works best. Guessing its a story much older that this forum. Nothing too new?
What I've done is buy three PSP 3000s one mint (nearish hopefully) one I'm going to use for the one game I really want to play on it being Valkyria Chronicles II on hard copy (any other must get hard copy tips will be appreciated btw). And then two cheaper ones. For some experimenting.
I'm open to suggestions for a stable low risk option and a high risk high reward option ;)
ARK-4 firmware seems to be the way to go nowadays. It's been a long time since I don't tinker with my PSP but if I had, that would be what I would choose.
Are all the PSP's version 3000?, if so, I would try to exchange one of those 3000 for a 2000, because screens in 2000 do not suffer from interlacing, if that bothers you as much as it bothers me.

Well, the contrast and colors is better on the 3000, but those screen suffer from interlacing, an awful effect that gives the feeling you're playing with scanlines when there is movement on the screen. For me, the better things on the 3000's screens do not outweight the horrible interlacing effect, but for some people it does not matter. It's up to you to decide, if you have the option to see both screens side by side :).
PSP 1000 screen is not recommended, they have very noticeable ghosting and the contrast is not very good. The few occasions I've played with PSP it was with my white PSP1000 and the first time I saw a PSP2000 screen I was freaking out.
But for the feel, you're right. Grabbing a PSP1000 is more comfortable and the sensation you're holding a better product is there. On the bad side, the weight can be too much if you're playing for a long time. I used to take off the battery while playing and just connect it to the AC adapter, just to lighten its weight xD.
Yeah, PSP 3000 was horrible not only interlacing, I got one with dark box "mura" in background very annoying should had returned but it was cheap outstock sale.
Lucky I replaced it with one from Aliexpress, this one is Superb, No interlacing, no mura, no ghosting and bright/deep Color and fast response, it very impressive now with newer LCD Tech than that old SHARP brand, almost psvita display.
I use the old stable NON permanent CFW, as I still can use it in stockmode.
Buy the PSP to micro SD memory adapter for easy transfers with PC.
Everything parts/tools you can find on Aliexpress and replace the joystock aswell that will drift.
It may be some are worse than others. I'll have three to compare soon. Hehe. But yea the main thing for me is that the screens are not scratched up and the pics did look good. In so far as scalines go I think I can handle them as long as they dont pan randomly Ive got an LCD TV that upscales and it generally the best thing ever apart from when time to time I fix my eyes on a certain spot an the scanning artefacts come to the fore. Its a thing that can be seen through, though. Definitely up for the modding option eventually too. One I work out how to get all the games playing perfectly with all the OHI that can be garnered ;)

I'm thinking it might be best to use one untampered with for PSX EBOOTS?
And another for PSP DLs & DLCs with all the mod connings?? Also is there a better SD adaptor??
Yea bloomin AliEs I bought a saroo off there once and it wasn't as pictured. Just depths of feckless husslers. Certainly the pictures likely mean nothing. I prefer to stick to eBay where are least feedback matters somewhat. Got a few things I want off of there. Love and hate it. Dragging their feet on the Switch replicas, huh? Perhaps they actually fear Japanese invasion over it ;()
Oooo, exciting! I don't have strong opinions on firmware. I think I'm running whatever was the most updated/stable back in 2021? But! For easy hardware mods, I recommend grabbing a glass LCD cover to replace the stock plastic one off ali express. They're like three dollars, take all of a couple minutes to swap out, and give the system a nice solid weight/feel. It also just looks way better, and is much more scratch and scuff resistant.
Great tips guys and gals! I've gone and got myself a PSP1000 too (two in fact) one is going to need modding. Hopefully I will be able to find a Valkyria Chronicles shell. Now I'm looking at the PSP GO what are the thoughts on that. They get pricey. Still popular in Japan it seems. Definitely got the pocket size appeal. It will be cool to get some sort of integrated CFW for ps3 and p-GO....
That may be on the cards too. I'm on a real hardware stint here. To be honest not too sure about the PSVITA yet it certainly looks good and it'd be a no brainer if it was PS2 capable. I wonder if there will we EBOOTS for it that can downgrade the demands for the emulation there. As far as VITA games go I definitely want to play those Trails games. It will likely happen just for that.
Hot-diggity! I'm going to be waiting a while on my PSPs there are restrictions on litium batteries. Only available by sea. Bloody hell. For some reason I had thought it was air only. Word to the wise :()
IIRC There is vitashell PKGj with (all) vita games dlc updates and most psp games shop for direct download on psvita and install.
Lucky in 2025 jb doesnt need PC and psvita link and toke 1+hour to hack like I did few years ago.
i followed a guide i found on reddit and just used whatever firmware the guide suggested at the time. i only tested a few ISOs on it but it seemed to work fine. once i actually get to my psp backlog i'll try loading the rest onto there.
also remember to change that old battery for a newer third party otherwise your psp is going to turn into a hand grenade.
Here is a copied and pasted selection of advice from hobbyist and UK eBayer Crafted_Re-Shell (all lower case on website) who offers an unbricking service:
'The better CFW today for me varies on the console. If I be honest, I don't know the PSP GO, PSP Street and PS Vita as much as the base models. So, for them, I wouldn't know which is the best CFW.
But, for the rest, I can give my humble opinion.
For the PSP 3000, I'd say it's definitely:
6.61 ARK-4
It's the latest one. PSP 3000 was the toughest out of the og models to hack as Sony used all the security they could think of lol. However, of course hackers got their way around it.
Originally, you couldn't make it permanent CFW, which means everytime you booted the PSP, you'd have to enter an app to "reinstall" the CFW; it literally takes like 5 seconds, but still a hinder nevertheless. But, now, it can somewhat be made permanent so everytime you turn on the PSP, it's already in the CFW mode without needing to do anything.
So, definitely I'd go with that. If you go for any other CFW (with the exception of infinity), they'd all be temporary CFW and could potentially brick your PSP (very frustrating).
For PSP 1000 and 2000, whenever I modded these two models for people or myself as a project, I'd always use CFW:
6.60 PRO-C
You can use Ark-4 like the 3000, but maybe it's just because it is fairly easier and has less steps, that's why I just use 6.60 PRO-C. I just don't see the need of upgrading those two models to the latest version, because it provides alot of things that are basically found in both.
Maybe another personal reason is, because I do uninstall CFWs aswell sometimes when reselling PSPs, it's less messier to do on 6.60 PRO-C than Ark-4.
All this being said, if you do go down this modding route, MAKE SURE to do extensive revision before you commence it. The videos I gave are just the better ones and simple ones I could find to follow. Bricking your PSP can end up becoming very daunting.
Another thing to note, 6.60 PRO-C doesn't work on some PSP 2000 models. You'll have to use Ark-4 instead. Using 6.60 PRO-C on those specific ones will end up bricking your PSP. I know it can sound overwhelming and scary, but honestly, once you know the process, it's a walk in the park lol
Yes, I accidentally bricked a PSP 2000 when I was testing it only to find out the motherboard I had was a higher grade security one (similar to which they use in PSP 3000).
The only way to find out for sure which motherboard you have...is to have a CFW on it and then install an app which allows you to see ??. But...to do that, you need to mod it first...it's a paradox ??.
That's why you need to know how to unbrick aswell, incase you brick it.
That, or you can straight for Ark-4, which works on ALL PSPs.
Another way to know which motherboard you have is to find out which year and month the PSP 2000 was made. Anything after 2008 of July will almost definitely be the one that is in risk of brick if not done properly (mother board version TA-088v3).
I do appreciate the PSP, especially since it's one of my most favourite and nostalgic console. There's alot of people who brick their PSP whilst trying to mod it or something and then completely give up, as unbricking can feel so overwhelming. I hate to see that, so thought let me do a service as cheap as possible for these people.'
