I played the first Kingdom Hearts a few years ago and I'm thinking of diving deeper into the series. Part of me wants to watch some Disney movies beforehand to catch all the references, but I also feel like I might understand right away since most of the characters and stories are pretty well known.

What do you all recommend? Worry about the movies later?

Okay, that's kinda of a complicated question, but I believe it is better to watch the movies first before playing the games, but y'know, you can only watch the movies you have interest in. The KH games usually (keyword being "usually") do retellings from the movies, with some cases acting more like prequels or sequels depending of the movie and the game, in Kingdom Hearts the events of The Nightmare Before Christmas don't happen, but in Kingdom Hearts II we see that the events of the movie did happen in between the games, but Sora, Donald and Goofy weren't around for it (which is probably for the best).

Also keep in mind that sometimes the plot of the movie may be interrupted depending of the game, in the first Kingdom Hearts for example, the Aladdin events end in a very different way because of the main plot of that game.

But honestly, diving into KH is not a bad idea, I actually did that recently and my love for this franchise was reawakened, and I'm praying that KH4 finally gives me some Treasure Planet and Gargoyles representation çwç

I'm feeling confused about if I should go through BBS before the first one since I don't have a comfortable default way to play PS2 currently, I don't get confused by plots often since I draw the connections right away.

@JoystickV2 That’s just the kind of feedback I was looking for. Knew I could count on y’all!
Hey man, always good to help someone get into a franchise so important to me xD

I LOVE TREASURE PLANET! THAT MOVIE IS SO GOOD! çwç
Also, I would recommend playing BBS in any way you can, before the first game, after the first game, it will always add more to the Kingdom Hearts Experience thanks to the story and characters.

Honestly man, as someone also replaying the games (well replaying everything before DDD and KH3 cause I never played those and didn't want to jump straight into them after so long) I'd say play the games and then watch the movies that were referenced in the games that you're interested in. Cause even if say there was a world you weren't a fan of, maybe you can still enjoy the movie it was based on. Especially if you never watch it before, plus Disney DVDs of those movies are like everywhere lol.

Going a little against the storm, you actually don't NEED to watch any of the movies to enjoy the games. And sometimes these games pick weirdly obscure movies to reference: like Tron or The Tree Musketeers. I don't think any of the movies in the games are horrible to watch, so I don't think you would have a bad time, but there are a lot of movies...

Replaying the games right now myself. Honestly, KH usually does such a horrible job retelling the Disney movie stories, knowing the movies themselves isn't going to impact your enjoyment of the games all that much. I'd say, if a world interests you, look up the movie it's based on and give it a watch. Otherwise, ehhh...

If BBS is all you can play, then go for it. It's an excellent game (I also recommend upping the difficulty to Critical--it's not a hard game in general and upping the difficulty will make you think a little bit more about the attacks you use, rather than just spamming). Though, while it is a prequel, it talks a lot about things that are better explained in Chain of Memories, 358/2 Days, and KH2. You'll get the broad strokes of the plot, but a lot of the original characters and locations that appear won't make much sense to you without having played (or read, or watched) those titles.

Thanks so much to all of you for helping me make my decision. Even though I’ve made my choice, I’d love to keep the conversation going. This topic is super interesting.

I say just go for it. Earlier this year I played KH1 and Birth By Sleep back to back and had a good time. I was going to keep it up with Chain of Memories, KH2 and Dream Drop Distance but got burned out, but yeah, KH is awesome.
