Recently bought a Japanese PS1 and it's been a blast. I don't speak or read Japanese but some titles don't strictly require it. This coupled with the cheap prices are why I decided to get one. Parappa the rapper and Um Jammer lammy are even still in English on the JP version and are quite affordable. It's been a blast collecting PS1 games again! Are there any PS1 games you like from the Japanese library?

P.S. what's your favorite PS1 game in general? It's been my favorite console as of late

Yeah, I've noticed some Asian releases may still have some form of English language to them.
Apparently the Japanese version of Deadly Premonition still has the English voice acting in it, they just have the subtitles in Japanese during cutscenes.

Any of the Spyro trilogy are probably my favourite PS1 game. If we're counting just Japanese developed games, then either Final Fantasy VII or Final Fantasy IX. I haven't played in actual Japanese versions of PS1 games though ::cirnoshrug

Ape Escape. It was the first game to revolutionize the neccessary use of dual analog controllers. I will never forget the friends i made and sleep overs we had playing from start to finish. Back then there were no game guides or walkthroughs, so we'd spend a whole year or two figuring out how to solve problems or advance our progress. Anytime i hear the Time Station tune, i'm always reminicing. Some of my friend's often bring up memories concerning that. One even made his call tone the same Time Station track. :loldog

This is a wonderful memory!!! I have a copy of ape escape 1 and 2 I need to go back to playing them because they really are special. That soundtrack is something else to boot!

A pleasant surpise to hear you're familiar with the series. I literally had a save file of the final level and would leave the main character in a crawling pose just to listen to the modified last boss tune: Galaxy Monkey. Any time you're in a crawling pose, the music changes to a more quiet, midi-like form of the stage music

For Japanese exclusive games; I really like LSD Dream Emulator, King's Field, Internal Section, Racing Lagoon, Slap Happy Rhythm Busters, Persona 2: Innocent Sin, Air Grave and Linda³ Again (Although that last one was also on Sega Saturn and arguably better from what I'm told, but I've only played the PS1 version myself).

For my favorite overall PS1 game; that's a tough one lol. If I look at what games I've come back to the most; then for me it comes down to Ape Escape or Final Fantasy IX. I think I'd lean more towards FFIX since it has one of my favorite stories of the FF games and some of my favorite characters. I also think it's where Square perfected their ATB system they started with Chrono Trigger.

I recently listened to the OST of Racing Lagoon. How the heck did such a gem not only go under the radar, but have an amazing sound track too? Squaresoft really pushed boundaries back then

Ah! Hello you in-shape, tall, blue and silver, well groomed, near flawless piece of nostalgia. Hand me a cold one will you? ::smug

My Japan-only favorites:

- Ace Combat 3 (only the Japanese version has the real deal game while non-Japanese version is shitty remake lol)

- Shiritsu Justice Gakuen (My beloved Japanese high school simulator fighting series RPG that you can even create your own character but non-Japanese versions are cut content just a bad fighting game lol)

- Racing Lagoon (My beloved street racing RPG stayed in Japan)

- Zero4 Champ DooZy-J (Another of my beloved street racing RPG)

- Kowloon's Gate (rest of the world other than Japan missed the fun of Kowloon's Gate insanity lolol)

- Baroque (In Japan we used this game like an illegal drug lol!!!)

- Fire Woman Matoigumi (Japan only high school simulator)

- Yuuyami Doori Tankentai (Stylish cool horror game!!!)

- London Seirei Tanteidan (Even Londoners missed the chance to play this game, bloody damn!!! lol)

- Koukidou Gensou: Gunparade March (This game is "wow". "Is this the real life or is this just fantasy?" lol)

- Mizzurna Falls (Twin Peaks game experience!!!)

- Kakuge-Yaro: Fighting Game Creator (As the name indicate 2D fighting game "creator" but more like using pre-created assets in highly customizable way to come up with your rather limited "fighting game". However in this game there are really great fighting moves to select for characters so it's fun and I like its OST)

My not-Japan-only favourites:

- Breath of Fire 4

- Persona 1

- Rising Zan: The Samurai Gunman (It's like granmama of God Hand and Samurai Western lol)

- Incredible Crisis (Gamepad killer game lol)

- Fighting Force 1

- The King of Fighters '96

- Jackie Chan Stuntmaster

- Tekken 3

- Colony Wars: Red Sun (Cool space action game that even has a simple cockpit!!)

- Resident Evil 3

- Alien Resurrection

- Harry Potter series

- Gran Turismo 2

- Metal Gear Solid 1

- Medal of Honor: Underground

- Vampire Hunter D

- Syphon Filter series

- Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

- Spider-Man series

- Twisted Metal 4 (Just because I can create my evil machine car lol)

- Colin McRae Rally 2.0

- Quake II

Ikr? That soundtrack is so good. I was blown away the first time I played the game, bobbing my head damn near every minute of playing the game lol.

Still can't believe i missed it. I'm just grateful i'm able to experience these little things that make me happy while i'm still alive.

PS1 library has tons of charming exclusive titles. These are among my favourites:
  • Summon Night 1 & 2: my favourite anime tactical RPG saga
  • Guardian Recall: Surprisingly good tactical RPG
  • Growlanser: a truly underrated diamond
  • Athena: Very curious game for fans of Athena
  • London Seirei Tanteidan: happy to see it was mentioned. Very interesting game with unique style graphics
  • Gunnm Martian Memory: another hidden gem, story wise is wonderful as it is based on the manga
  • Twilight Syndrome / Moonlight Syndrome: a must play of any horror fan
  • GeGeGe no Kitarou: Gyakushuu! Youma Daikessen : prepare to suffer if you don't use savestates
  • Chippoke Ralph no Daibouken: more suffering lol
  • Animetic Story Game: Cardcaptor Sakura: my favourite Card Captor Sakura game <3

Panzer Bandit is a really fun and frenetic beat 'em up exclusive to Japan! I highly recommend it, even if it is a little on the harder side sometimes.
