Thanks to Jimbo_McDumbo giving me the idea of making this post. I not seen one so I was thinking lets make one where we recommend japense tv shows you think people should see.

I will start with my biggest recommendations.

My man Shinya Arino and his show Game Center CX need more recognition.

Two of my favorite live action comedy shows.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM

Based on the Manga Saint Young Men, Jesus and Buddha go to Japan for vacation, comedy and antics with funny shenanigans
Parody of old JRPG's like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Hilarious action.

Not really sure if it's what you're looking for, but I watched a ton of Takeshi's Castle when I was young and have a huge soft spot for it.
Did you see that there was a return to takeshis castle series released in 2023?

I did! I admittedly didn't enjoy it quite as much as the classic episodes, but it was still fun.
That is all good, I am looking forward to finally watching the show myself these days. The most I know about it, is the Game Center CX episode of the Takeshi's castle game. (It is a seperate game to Takeshis challenge.) It was played via gigantic annoying game mat and it got me curious about how the contestants actually fared. The show was very hard to watch while I was growing up due to accessability, I only heard of it from word of mouth from my friends because it only played on one channel in my country at odd times.

I'll be honest, I really only watch anime. I hear that "Game Center CX" is pretty good tho.

  • Peeping Life
  • Shougeki Gouraigan
  • Iron Chef (the original one)

Gaki no Tsukai holds a pretty special place in my heart. Don't know why I started watch these comedians, but damn, their content is (or used to be anyway) pretty unhinged & they understood comedy. The yearly specials were a blast everytime.

Luckily Documental was born along the way & that's some of the GOAT comedy material. It's downright crude but man these comedians put on a performance. There's really nothing else like this. The LOL versions of this are completely butchered.

Game Center CX is great stuff to fall asleep to. But I also really enjoy Tokyo Encounter! Just a couple of anime voice actors (Gintoki's one) playing retro games & being geeky about it.

Oddly enough never tried to attempt any of these live-action shows...

Where can i watch this show without downloading them? An episode is about 1.5 GB.
I hope you enjoy ::terriermon-happy

I forgot to add that there are some eps that are missing subs. The majority of the episodes do have subtitles but there is a few that may not and I don't want it to catch you by surprise.

I started watching Anime in 95 and on VHS. At the same time as I was watching Lain, Boogiepop Silent Mobius, Crest of the Stars, and SoulTaker for the first time on TechTv I was waking up early to watch Jidaigeki films on IFC every weekend. Since then I have watched Anime alongside Live action films and tv shows. Also I haven't watched dubs since the 90s, and back then I often had no choice in if it was subs or dubs. If one wanted to watch said media one could not pick and choose as easily back then as whatever was on the tape was what you got.

Ikebukuro West Gate Park/IGWP; the show is better than the anime imho also the G-Boys are better in the show.
G.T.O. The Series, The movies are good too.
House of Ninjas

So I am a huge Japanese detective buff, so here are some of shows I liked. Most of them will be detective shows, but some are really obscure picks.

Long_Goodbye-p1.jpg
The Japanese adaptation of The Long Goodbye. Phenomenal adaptation, I would recommend this to people who don't even normally like watching Japanese/foriegn shows.
Kagi_no_Kakatta_Heya_Poster.jpg
Kagi no Kakatta no Heya. The locked room mysteries. This is more of your run of the mill style detective show focused on a gimmick, in this case, every case is a locked room mystery. It's alot of fun.
Biblia_Koshodou_no_Jiken_Techou.jpg
Biblia no kodansho jiken. The entire name may be longer. Kind of watches like a Hallmark special, it's about mysteries surrounding books. I liked the human stories in it.

Akuma to Tenshi. Angels and Demons.

This one is basically cold case, if the main character was a lawyer pushing plea bargins.

Hard nut!

This is another one of those gimmicky detective shows about math. The main girl is really clumsy and cute.

Watashi wa kirai na Tantei. The detective that I hate.

This show is a comedy goldmine. Basically it's a parody detective show, making fun of Japanese detective shows. The best part is that there is this insane meta narrative where the 4th wall is breaking down, both of the main characters know this is a tv show but are hiding it from the other characters. It's amazing.
Kurokouchi-p1.jpg
Kurokochi.

Possibly the most insanely controversial show ever made out of Japan. Basically, lots of Japanese conspiracy theories are in this show (some of the darker ones I know are unfortunately true). It's kind of a thriller. Has some screwed up shit in it, but it's legitimately amazing.

season-2.jpg
Jin.

Looks like a samurai drama right? But it's actually a medical show about a doctor time traveling by accident right before the Meji Restoration. It's awesome to see him try and invent medicine before it would even exist, along with the historical politics.

Coffeeya no Hitibito.

A really obscure one for sure. This is a really dark human drama about a man running a coffee shop as he starts to get into a relationship with the widow of the man he killed. Lots of human stories, pretty grim but realistically handled. Mostly.

I'll still love you in 20 years.

Romance, with time travel. Basically dude is trying to break up his past self and his future wife before they get married and eventually a divorce. Pretty funny, and heart touching sometimes.

And to finish it up, Odoru Daisousen. Bayside Shakedown.

Outside of Tokyo Love Story and The end of the world (Don't watch that one, it's literally so depressing that people have committed suicide watching it), this is one of the most famous shows in Japan. Everyone who is 30 and up will know it.

Basically it's about this unorthodox cop (columbo if he was 20), who gets into trouble and his silly department he works for. Episode 2 is one of the greatest comedy episodes of all time.

So there is my list for you guys. Also, for those of you who posted The Man who can't get married, that show is great as well. Loved it.

I used to live in Japan, so alot of these shows came out during the time period I was over there. 😅
