Explanation from bulbapedia: The names Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Stadium 2 refer to different games between Japanese and English. Since this game was never released outside Japan, the later game known as ポケモンスタジアム2 (Pokémon Stadium 2) in Japanese had its name adapted to Pokémon Stadium in English. Subsequently, the third game in this series had its name changed as well, from ポケモンスタジアム金きん銀ぎん (Pokémon Stadium G&S) in Japanese to Pokémon Stadium 2 in English. This game's Japanese title literally translates to Pokémon Stadium. The game is subtitled with the English subtitle Pocket Monsters' Stadium. On the official Japanese site for the game, the background image uses the English title Pocket Monster's Stadium.[2] starseekers notes: only 42 […]

Another game that got fucked because of the 64DD.
Yeah this game is incomplete, the second Japanese game is basically the complete version of this one.
Japanese kids got screwed with that one.
Boy... so many hate against this game XD

Thank you very much for the information and sharing this game and I think this game is the real Pokémon Stadium and the first Pokémon game to be completely 3D being a spin-off of the Main Franchise.
That is 100% correct. It was the first game were you could see (and play with) 3D modeled Pokémons.

What happened to this game is NOT really that important, but just a 3D testing, because that was ONLY a japanese game made for the japanese public:

If the original 64DD version would have been released in Japan, in late 1997 or early 1998, as it was originally expected to be this game, with all the pokémons inside... boy, who knows what the future of 3D pokémon would had been.

Maybe a fail? How many 64DD would Stadium helped to sell in Japan? Enough to sell that add-on in the west? MMmmm... I really doubt that.

Pokémon, by 1997, was still a Japanese-exclusive phenomena, it was an unexpected colossal success for Nintendo (and the japanese media), and they took a lot of time to meticulously plan, adapt and translate to various languages the original GB game to the west. In Europe, Pokémon Red and Blue was released !in late 1999! A year later than Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
And yellow? arrived in mid-2000 in Europe! They were huge successes, because they were addictive, but ALSO because they had nice translations to major languages: Everybody played them, even many girls: Not all the european children understand "English", and much less in 1999. And Pokémon had too much text for a 7-12 year old.

So, nobody cared about this first "Pokemon Stadium" in the west by 1997, and almost all the 1998, much less in Europe, when Pokémon by then, was just a very obscure japanese frenzy.

Nintendo just did Pokémon Stadium 2 (simply known as "Pokémon Stadium" in US and Europe) knowing it had to be a complete GOOD product, also localized to full 3 extra languages (apart from English) including voices in all of those languages. And it sold pretty well, fomenting the Pokémon franchise there.
