Ignore the fact that we don’t know the exact day it launched, nor were console launches big AT ALL at the time.

It’s the big day! You’ve been hearing about the Famicom from Japanese gaming mags! It’s come to the U.S. as the Nintendo Entertainment System! You buy your console! What other launch games are you getting that day?

For reference: THESE are your options! Note that your console will already come with Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, and Gyromite.

Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, and Kung Fu were staples of my NES play as a kid, so I'm going with them.

Since I’m getting the deluxe set, I’ll probably get Stack Up and Hogan’s Alley to justify all the peripherals my console is coming with. Other than that, I’ll have to go for Mach Rider, Donkey Kong 3, and Popeye!

My wallet will never recover from this day in 1985, apparently. 🥲

Sorry for that mistake! I was conflating it with the launch of Mario 1, which we don’t know the date for. Thank you for the correction!

that is a bit weird. but what's even weirder is that the game came out on a friday the 13th in japan just a month prior to the us release.

I'd pick up Donkey Kong, for sure. I want the arcade experience in my home!

Sonic the hedgehog.

Clu Clu land, Baloon Fight and ExciteBike i guess. I'm not a big fan of any of the other NES launch titles and you said that Mario Bros and Duck Hunt already came bundled with the console.

I got both NES n SMS Xmas '86. I had already played a bunch of them at a friend's house n me mum's friend's-n-her younger brother's house (who, in early '86 already had a ton of NES titles all arranged neatly in a custom entertainment center)... I had SMB/Duck Hunt, The Legend of Zelda, The Legend of Kage (Legend of Kelda! Legend of Zage! xD ok ok looL), Metroid, Kid Icarus, Super Pitfall, Urban Champion n a bootleg 110-in-1 comp cart fuLL of glitchy early Famicom titles of the utmost fascinating goofiness. no R.O.B. the Robot or Gyromite unfortunately - but I had the officiaL Nintendo Power guide or something with high-quality colored map layouts n even featured Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (which had not hit stateside shores quite yet) I was more taken overaLL with Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Hang-On/Safari Hunt, Black Belt [hokutonoken], Wonder Boy, the built-in Snail Maze, n the 'Sega card' games Ghost House n My Hero. more colorful, more occidentaLLy-weird/creative, more challenging (sometimes for the 'wrong' reasons - but loved em nevertheless)

n I was still pickin up games for Commodore 64 at computer stores so yes - very spoiled meh was. etermaLLy gratefuL - especiaLLy in how it relates in today's context

Excitebike, Mach Rider, Donkey Kong Dr, Baloon FIght, and Gyromite.

DONKEY KONG JR. MATH. the definitive EDGY-EDU-title to end aLL schooL funding conspiracies, burnt stacks of manipulative fictional abridged-history books n latch-key afterschooL curriculum gang-initiation shootoutz. Mario Is Missing? IS A GAME NO ONE MISSES!! - IF UR REPORT CARD IS STR8 F's BEWARE THE 2 + 2 INTEGER n PRIME NUMBERED GODDAMN'D WRATH!! IF IT AIN'T *ON* LIKE DUNKEY KONG JVNIOR MATH - THEN YOUR NES SHOULDN'T BE *ON* n UR BRAIN WILL SPLIT IN HALF!!!

*the preceding paid advertisement was paid for by 'that guy' who wiLL defend the Virtual Boy, N-Gage, n game.com to the death - in conjunction with Kirby vacuum cleaners. TIME TO GIVE DEDEDE a KIRB-BEATDOWNNNNNNNintendo [Game Boy startup logo BEEP sounds for no reason]*

Bah, hogwash! I'm not buying that sex hotel's cheap plastic box, it's gonna be dead on arrival! I'm way better off with my SG-1000!

Assuming I can only choose three games: Mario Bros. is a great arcade game, and I'm really good at the GBA version, so I'd want to brush up my skills on the NES game. Pinball is a really strong, deep pinball game for the time, and an awful lot of fun just to goof around with – I certainly can't think of a better 8-bit pinball game. And Balloon Fight is an effing phenomenal game with two really good modes – I could just play Balloon Trip forever and be happy about it.

Have any of you guys ever tried to play that NES Golf game? It's the most excruciating thing ever. That game made a lot of my time with NES Remix completely intolerable.

No porn launch titles?

Oh well then, Super Mario Bros.
