It's a great time to be into Retro Games

With games and consoles getting more and more expensive*, and now tariffs making the issue worse, it sure is a great time to be into retro games! I really want the Switch 2 and plan on buying it, but I think I'm gonna take a break from modern gaming for a little bit and focus on my incredible backlog of retro games. Looking forward to it!

Anyone else considering doing the same?

*In actuality, we are still currently living in an era where video games are at the cheapest they have ever been, even with the aforementioned price hikes, considering $60 had the value of $125 back when I was a kid. But it still hurts to see prices go up.
modern day gaming has gems, but just feels a lot more detatched and soulless to me, i've been doing the same but very on and off for a while and my backlogue is huge so i'm planning on just sweating out older games and prioritizing them

And yet, profits are at a record high. Even when you subtract the increased cost of development and then adjust for inflation, they're still raking in way more than they used to. All the while, they're offering way less than they used to, no manual, no goodies in the box, and most recently no physical media to speak of.

Games SHOULD be cheaper! Heck, the ones with micro-transactions should be free.

I just discovered what retroachievements are
What's the point of that feature? I've seen it on my handheld but didn't activate it/bothered to start using it. You just score on retro games and get your score displayed somewhere online or is there more to it?

Indeed. Now I got a huge backlog on all my consoles and despite there are some recent games I really want to play (Silent Hill 2 remake and a few more), I have more than enough games to entertain myself for a long time. So yes, it's a great time!!!

Sure, retro gaming is great now if you're emulating or using flashcarts. Retro gaming market has been inflated years before tariffs became the trendy thing to talk about.
Very true, it's been over a decade since you could find retro hardware at a fair price. I found a Gameboy Color with Tetris DX at a goodwill for $3 back in 2014 and even then I was blown away by such a smoking find.

Relegating tariffs to just being a "trendy thing to talk about" is a bit of an understatement, though. They are trending, for sure, but that's due to the real-world consequences they are bringing. And I wouldn't be surprised if the retro hardware inflation only gets worse as a result of them.

I believe it's more than that, sharing not just scores, but different milestones and other achievements, depending on the game.
It's mainly just a way to keep the dopamine spiking while playing games from before they started using addictive tactics like that. But it's also a way to feel connected to the retro gaming community. Either way, ymmv, depending on what kind of player you are.

Yeah I'm with you on the soulless part. Very rare that I feel "the magic" with modern games as much as I do for retro games.

Not gonna argue abt modern games being cashgrabs, but it is true that the expenses on making a AAA game nowadays can compete with high-budget movie productions, so it's just natural that games should be made to get profit in a long run.
But yeah, now that retro gaming is accesible in its entirety, and as humans we tend to hold dear what we had, it's always a great time to enjoy retro stuff. Fck modern slice of life btw, retro is better

It's a great time if you sail the seven seas and get the game roms. It isn't a great time if you are collecting physical games, especially post COVID. Be prepared to spend way too much money on a game just because it sold badly when it was being produced. ::frown

Honestly even if MKW were $60 again, it'd probably be years before I ever get to the Switch 2. I don't even have everything from the original I wanted

Here too, I've gotten 'lost' in a couple modern games, all the dialogue, everything, the learning curve, controls, tasks, completed missions. I got a Nintendo NES in 1987, and had an Atari 2600 before that. I connect with some games as from the past, others, discovering so many today because I could never afford a lot back then. I NEVER played a Sega Saturn until just last year and only thru emulation. In fact, at least for now, my whole gaming world is virtual unfortunately. So much 'new' old stuff for me. All the Japanese stuff, fan translations, etc. Strong, on-line retro gaming communities. I'm sure early emulation (I started in 2001), paved the way for modern emulation including stuff on Steam, Switch, 1UP arcade machines, NES Mini's, etc. I have always loved and appreciated the emulators themselves, and all the configuration options, and of course save-states, where would I be without them! I must say that arcade machine emulation was ALWAYS my favorite, ALWAYS considered an arcade machine running inside a PC the best. All those chips dumped and running. I plan to stay retro all my last days here. Retro forever! To your last bit, I remember some NES games at $49.95. I could be wrong but I believe my Super Mario Bros. 2 cart was $80 because they allowed us to purchase it on some sort of layaway before the cart even got to the store. Even in the days of the NES & Genesis, games weren't cheap. I only had a few.

I always play 6th and below(7th gen is only PSP, Wii and DS as I don't have a way to play PS3 and Xbox 360) games

as I don't have a modern console and I would prefer to get a more powerful PC and a Switch with ''magic'' instead getting Switch 2, PS5 or Xbox Series
Agreed

After seeing the recent news, it seems that emulating or playing old PC titles will continue to be my norm.

Every day is a good day to play retro games. They're [usually] small and [depending on the system] can run on just about anything. Breath of Fire 4 was the only game I played on my PS Vita for the longest time because it fit on my tiny proprietary card.

I agree.
Another good point for retro gaming, a lot of people seem to be trading in great retro games lately. I stopped into the local retro games store the other day and they were drowning in old consoles and games! Really good stuff that I haven't seen in ages.

Retro gaming took on a weird turn within the last fifteen or so years???

I think all the hype and demand over remakes and remasters really poisoned how people felt about older games. There's a general sentiment of refusing to play anything that "aged poorly" that didn't really exist before. Honestly, a lot of examples that people list are things that just require some practice to get used to again at most.

I almost hope all the doom and gloom over how unreasonable pricing for games and consoles these days actually does drive people to get more interested in emulation ESPECIALLY since emulation in general is so accessible these days. You can play most things on a smartphone these days!

Really do hope there's a change in the opinion on older stuff where people stop being afraid to try something that seems a bit more obtuse than what they make these days. What I'm really trying to say is that I'm a sicko that enjoys playing games on the Nintendo 64 and I think everyone needs to check out Jet Force Gemini.

You know how modern games on xbox, steam and playstation have achievements? its like that, but for retro games. All the achievements are fanmade and made by members of the community. If the game doesn;t have achievements, then you can request someone to make them or make your own.
And yeah basically, it just tracks to your account and displays them online on their website. Click the blue R under my name and you'll see the last few games i've played, my achievement status for those games, my achievement score and details on what I was doing on the last game I played.

JFG is a great example of what you’re talking about. A game with terrible controls and muddy graphics that is still 100% worth playing. I used to have the cartridge for N64, I never did save all the little Ewok guys for the good ending…

I'd say the controls take some getting used to, but it works well enough once you get the hang of it.

THE ONLY CATCH is that it works best with the original N64 controller. The one thing people overlook with it is that the analog stick had a wider range of movement than the ones you can find on any other controller. It feels really finicky otherwise.

Also I replayed it recently-ish enough (maybe a couple of years ago) and it's surprising how the tribal teddy bear ewoks sent most people to give up (I used to be one). I think most people play the levels the first time, which can take a long time like even hours, but then don't realize that once you unlocked and did everything in them you basically can race through them within a few minutes afterwards.

Getting them all didn't really take long at all. I encourage any other sickos who play N64 games who gave up on it to give it a second chance.

We're living in the golden age of retro. Best enjoy it while you can.
