Is there something wrong with me that I dislike Chainsaw Man?

Better not ask
Ok, this might be an unpopular opinion, but I honestly feel like this anime/manga is super overrated and overhyped. When it first came out, all I ever heard were positive things, but for me, most of the characters felt flat and annoying. The only one I could tolerate was Power. Everything else just felt so overly edgy that it made me cringe.
I talked about Chainsaw Man with some people at my university, and I noticed there were basically three types of reactions:
  • The first group were people who had only really watched few anime like Naruto and Bleach. They were like, “OMG, this is the best thing ever!” and then went back to playing Genshin Impact on their Iphones
  • The second group were the hardcore Fujimoto fans who treated every single thing he created like it was a masterpiece.
  • And the third group were people who had watched a lot of anime. They didn’t necessarily dislike Chainsaw Man, but they weren’t super impressed either—they just thought it was alright
So I just want to ask, on neutral ground: what do you think about it? If yes then why do you like it so much?

I really enjoyed the manga, but 90% of it was the art and clever use of black & white contrast. Setting is cool but most characters felt very one dimentional and basic to me.

Short answer: No. Sometimes things click, sometimes not, for instance I don't like One Piece much no matter how people keep saying it's the best ever... yes I have watched a bit over 500 eps of it and read lots of manga (60+ volumes), but I tbh I just don't care about that series very much. Oda's and mine sense of humour doesn't match either which doesn't help. Anyways, Chainsawman... I have seen only anime, I liked it, but I have seen spoilers about manga and not too happy about the direction it goes later.. I will watch the Reze Arc movie, and the eventual 2nd season too, though. :D My advice is not to care about hype, reviews and raving, just watch/read whatever feels good, and if something doesn't, so what? It's your own time you are using. Yep yep.

I watched the first episode after some people I know told me it was awesome. I thought it was trash. Those same people raved about Death Note, which I hated. I need new anime watching friends. Frieren is so good it's made it hard to enjoy a lot of other anime.

nah it's cool. I like it ok but it's not in my top 5 SJ series.

There's nothing wrong if you dislike chainsaw man on the other hand there's something wrong if you dislike yotsuba
Never watched it really but always looked cool

Can I ask (I dont want to make any grudge) what part of the setting feels cool to you? Because for me, there’s nothing really new about it, and I don’t see why it feels unique to so many people.

Like, I get why people enjoy One Piece, but I seriously don’t get why Chainsaw Man is seen as something so special. Nothing I hear from fans who hype it up sounds groundbreaking or makes me go “wow, that’s actually interesting.” Instead, my reaction is more like, “Ok, cool… but 20+ other anime have already done the same thing, so what’s so unique about it?”

Anime fans are weird. A lot of really popular stuff is really quite garbage when you sit down and watch it, but they'll still tell you anime is better than everything in the world including live action stuff. Don't even get me started on that Solo Leveling trash

nah fuck that light novel shit.

nah fuck that light novel shit.
Seems more light novels are getting adapted into anime these days than manga

I really like anime, but I find only a small percentage of the acclaimed stuff is actually appealing to me. Like I love Cowboy Bebop, Frieren, and some of Gen Urobuchi's stuff. But things like Solo Leveling, Death Note, and Chainsaw Man did nothing for me.

Some of it has to be age related too because I enjoy less anime now than I did years ago.

I believe by your comments that you have problems with anime or japanese stuff. I recall that most of your comments just disregard anime, japanese games or even japanese dub or something like that, if I am not mistaken. Being a western hooligan is ok, I saw many japanese hooligans as well, but I think we should be more objective here. I don't like most of western stuff and I say it out loud, but I understand some people have their preferences. I just prefer not to say that people who prefer western comics / stuff is weird as well.

Nevertheless, disliking an anime, regardless of how good it "apparently" is has nothing wrong in it. I don't like Naruto, One Piece, Gintama, Bleach or Dragon Ball, to put some famous stuff on the table, and there is nothing wrong with me. If else, I feel the freedom to decide what I like and what I don't, show it to the world and be proud of it.

Just be proud of what you don't like, but expect others to like it :)

I think the little dog thing with a chainsaw face is cute, but that's all I remember about it because I only made it a few chapters in before I realized it wasn't clicking. But I had the same thing with Jujutsu Kaisen and supposedly that's the best thing ever, so idk.

Nah, like others have said; there's nothing inherently wrong with you just because you don't like something popular. Not everything is made for everyone, nor should they be.

Nah, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I'm not the biggest fan of shounen anime, but again, that's just MY opinion.

(And hey, if it makes you feel any better, even Neuro-sama didn't like it.
:loldog)

Chainsaw man is great
It has unique style, great characters and amazing story with tons of small details you only going to notice on second read, not to mention one of the best manga panels i seen in recent years.
You haven't mentioned it, but i assume you watched anime? With probably was a mistake since its not finished, unlike manga
It is not for everyone of course.
There is nothing wrong with you bro, you just have a bad taste ::smirk1

Also this one is weird
  • The first group were people who had only really watched few anime like Naruto and Bleach. They were like, “OMG, this is the best thing ever!” and then went back to playing Genshin Impact on their Iphones
Because i seen completely opposite, it's people who only seen dbz, naruto etc shit on Chainsaw man calling it weird, cringe and say they don't get the story, and then go back watching power scaling videos on their iphones

I don't like CSM though conversely I also don't dislike it. If you like it I respect you for claiming that right. I am in the above stated third estate. I have been watching subbed anime since the 90's. In the early 2000s I was in my edgy phase where I avoided nearly all popular Shonen shows like the plague except for Inuyasha, and Naruto S1-2 by osmosis through siblings. Eschewing such things in favor of Shojo shows and more quality anime like Excel Saga, Familiar of Zero and Texhnolize. I still can't really get into nearly all Shonen shows these days and would personally enjoy a single episode of Doraemon more than any given episode of DBZ. I have seen a metric ton of anime at this point and CSM is nothing new or ground breaking, sakuga or otherwise. At least that is my perception of the anime, the manga might be better. I tend to defer to the source material of any IP as being the definitive experience. I'm sure CSM is serviceably good for Shonen fans. I couldn't say myself as it was about as interesting to me as Blue Exorcist was, and the only impression I got from that show was that it was trying to make wallet chains cool again. Most anime in general don't have enough otaku elements for me to really enjoy them.

(Death Note became trash when
they killed L and replaced him with Near and Mello.
I only watched Death Note because my ex was watching that and Nana at the time.)

I like the first part untill they kill makima, then I don't know what the autor want to tell us, it's so fkng random and I dislike random sht.

It's not a bad manga but I don't understand how it's become this big and popular to everyone.

i have to say this always bothers me a bit:
like i mean well, you probably overthinking and adding "context" to the post, but it really comes across as very defensive.

like who cares if they only watched those common shows that doesnt mean they cant find something that you are not seeing and love the show for it.

or why would been a "hardcore fan" matter here, like maybe you are thinking that "they are obsecive so they dont have an objective opinion".

who does?? we are all subjective its about taste, if anything it would be interesting to check why they love it so much.

and the last one just feels like the "see im not the only one" which yeah nothing wrong with that,

but this whole thing just comes out very defensive and not really "i wanna be open minded".

hope you take this well, big hug.
