Is there anything you do when you want to fully get into an old game?

I'm trying to focus my attention down to a game at a time if possible. I've seen other places that people suggest reading the manual first on older retro rpgs, so I've started to do that. Do you have any other habits that you like to do to fully immerse yourself in a game?

I've also seen people suggesting watching trailers (if available) and approaching each game like it has just come out, and that it is the only game you have.

There are games I'd rather play on CRT and/or original hardware, or something that resembles it but better (I wish I had a ModRetro Chromatic).

For some games I'm usually already familiar with, I like playing it with enhancements on emulator or a decompiled port.

Besides that, there isn't much else. I like just jumping into games, sometimes by some random recommendation I saw on the internet, other times by just selecting random games on a rom pack. I do no research beforehand, like you wouldn't believe for how long I thought Shantae only had the GBC game.

I do similar things too, like reading the manual and watch trailers, if they are available.

I often research about the game a lot: if he game came out by regular retail it may have people that

already researched it and collected things like art, OST and trivia about it (all of this while trying to avoid

spoiler).

If the game was translated by someone I often research if they talked about why they translated it and

what the game means to them. It often helps to get some investment in the game.

But, as @TheWanderer said, the main thing is if the game will hook you up.

Same as Wanderer, also if you get stuck be not afraid of searching for help online, that was also a thing pre-internet with strategy guides anyway

For modern games I watch trailers and maybe a review to see if a game is for me. For retro games if the cover art peaks my interest then I start trying it out through emulation or original hardware. Like one time I visited a retro game store and I saw Digital Devil Saga 1 for like $25. Instantly bought it because of how mysterious it looked since the back showed nothing about the gameplay and it has been my favorite Megaten game ever since.

if i am making a night of playing a horror game, i will turn off the lights and light candles
if i am playing a role playing game old world in nature - if i am very sucked into the experience i sometimes will cook food that is western and old fashioned like bread and beans
i am very silly (i did this yesterday after playing metaphor refanatico for around eight hours)

The only way i know to get into an old game that doesnt look like good or is beautiful is to FORCE myself into it.

I think we on this site would actually consider that pretty cool lol

Set up Retroachievements and make sure the game is playable first of all
I don’t want to think too much about achievements. Do you find yourself being able to enjoy the games still without thinking much about the achievements?

Try the hell to relax, lol.
The "Jank-of-Ages" can't be overcome if you're being uptight about it.

Most I'd do is read the manual for a game first, but overall, I just wing it. The only time I get a guide is if I'm going for a specific ending, I'm lost with what to do, or I'm playing an old JRPG.

With retro games I consider 'important' I try my best to play it on something connected to a TV rather than a PC screen - it feels like I'm seeing the game more or less as 'intended', which allows me to feel that much more invested, even if it is just the completely fake difference between a monitor and a TV screen, given that I do not own a CRT TV.

With any game, not only old ones, I usually play on real hardware (if I can), play on high volume, and in general just pay attention and don't think things too hard (unless it's a strategy game or smth), anything feels better when you just let it flow. I was replaying GTA SA with the TTDISA mod and just roaming around doing any side mission I wanted, spraying graffitis, taking pics at new things... No matter the game, going at your own pace matters the most.

This one is giga important for me, personally. If I play a RPG on the SNES I've never seen before, I want to be able to judge the game as if it was new. It made playing Lufia 2 last year a much more enjoyable experience (though I didn't beat it).

I also tend to not look up guides/tips for old games unless absolutely necessary.

Also, I've recently been using my CRT as a monitor so that I can use it for emulated games, which has made me play way more, and finish more games than when I just booted them up lazily on my PC monitor. The little ritual really went a long way.

I can relate in playing GTA IV recently. I enjoy it more when I just relax and explore.

Never look at guides or any spoiler content, if you finished it and get an ending, be it good or bad, THEN you can do a second playthrough and see what you missed, i finished SMT Devil Survivor with the Tyrant and Neutral endings with 0 guides, then i saw what did i miss or lacked to get the good ones.

i tend to stream older stuff to friends. helps when we can all laugh at the jank and poor design work if it exists. friends all do the same too. leads to some really fun gaming when we can all sit around, stream old games to each other and laugh at it all.

Playing on a CRT has helped me. A lot of games don't look right unless it is on a CRT.
Those pre-rendered games on PS1 still look great on a CRT but can be blurry and distracting on an LCD.

I need a block of time set aside for gaming. Some games have no save point for what seems like hours. More modern Rpg's require a minimum of 4 hours to put a dent in it. Aside from that, snacks and a drink like I was 10 on the old systems. Playing on original systems brings back a certain feeling of nostalgia.

Usually I'll stream it for some friends if I really want to feel compelled to beat it. Being able to riff on what's going on or just discuss bullshit in general goes a long way. Inebriation also helps, but I stopped smoking a while ago. I don't think I would have been able to finish Xenoblade Chronices 2 otherwise.
