I'll admit that I'm not the biggest movie fan out there, but I still love quite a few films to death.

Problem is that a surprising number of them just lose me at some point because they feel like they are stretching themselves for no real reason, slowing down the plot by going on tangents that either never get resolved or don't really go anywhere.

I had quite a few examples of this, but the one that immediately came to mind was LaLaLand.

I absolutely adored that film, but its runtime north of two hours felt unnecessarily long for the story it wanted to tell and I can't help but feeling that a lot of minor scenes could have been better employed as extras upon release instead of letting them freely eat up and "bloat" the movie's length the way they are now (and I thought I was alone on this, but it turns out that it's a pretty shared sentiment among fans of the film).

Do you have any examples of this sort of thing?

Blood in Blood out is an awesome movie but its runtime is 3 hours
but every scene is important and its not stretched out at all and never gets boring

Zodiac was one that was good, but my friend and I literally went for a snack run about halfway through. She didn't even have to say anything, I knew she was thinking what I was thinking. Animal crackers.

Yes. Russian Ark (2002). Conceptually it's a great film, but after 1:30 hours watching the same shot can feel a bit tiresome if you are not in the mood.
Then there are the actual long films. And that is another kind of beast altogether.

i went to the cinema to watch lord of the rings and fell asleep
i think half the audience was asleep as well

Once Upon a Time in America, the uncut version. I wouldn't remove a single scene, but I'm glad it has an intermission. At nearly 4 hours, it needs one.

I wonder if the new complete release of Kill Bill will have an intermission too...::thinking

Strangely... I was gonna add Das Boot to that list (because it truly is monstrously large), but not a single scene is wasted there.
