I just ordered a Mini-ITX case to use my PC parts which I changed recently to use Batocera on my TV. I always had PlayStation consoles so haven't tried even once Saturn, Genesis, Dreamcast or Gamecube versions of the games.
As far as I played there was so much games which were better in weaker systems than their predecessors or vice versa ofc. For example most people suggests Alone in the Dark's DOS or PSX version over than Saturn.

Is there any list about it to experience games at their best version? sankyu ^-^

If it's not on that list, you could probably ask on here too. Lord knows between all of these nerds you'll get a good answer.

If anyone asks me (or @Gorse) about the best version of a sonic game, we’d probably give too many details you didn’t ask for!

Sadly is not sorted by console, but here you go

I had no idea there was a formal list, but as the annoying detail obsessed carbon based lifeform that I am, I will fill in gaps where I can.

I vehemently disagree with this list on final fantasy 4 and it lacks probably the biggest named game it could, resident evil 4, but otherwise it's a good list.

One thing I'll defend to the moon and back and back again: SEGA Saturn Baroque is better than PSOne Baroque

Why are they even suggesting ultra-hard DS version with touchscreen gimmicks for first timers over PC port of the 3D version that has a normal difficulty and DS one is optional "hard mode"?

So, for Resident Evil 4, it has three PC versions, original botched PS2 port, later better port form Gamecube and the Remake, which is a separate game altogether, so it doesn't count (it's a great port tho). SO for original non-remake RE4, it's either GameCube or current Steam PC ver with a fan mod, which fixes stuff like... mouse aiming. I think it's called re4_tweaks? Original old port has completely different modding infrastructure, not compatible.

On the other hand, RE5 PC port is perfectly fine but use fan patch for better aiming and possibly to remove the green tint as the game was made during the "piss filter" era.

Anyway, rule of thumb for any game with a PC port, make a quick search (or brows Steam Guides first page) to see if there's a fan patch, many ports from PS2-PS3 era are just bad.

I like that site's version on Metal Gear, quick explanation of why there's no one definitive version for each of them. One note, it mentions fighting Mantis in OG PC port with keyboard being bad, but there's no need, if you have USB or bluetooth gamepad, they work with PCs.

Can anyone contribute there? I can make a list for first dozen Final Fantasys and all Tomb Raiders... the latter on PS1 have quirks that need to be mentioned, like PAL versions for all but 1 being better on PlayStation. And NTSC having so many versions with needless bundled demos the earlier disc presses are better (or just play PC version but those ALSO need fan mods to run well).

Have to correct you on is resident evil 4's gamecube version came first, not the ps2 version, the ps2 version was the port, in general the best version to play nowadays would be the hd remaster on steam with a couple of mods though as it has a 60fps framerate cap that you can change on the fly as well as a excellent hd retexture mod.

As for your question, it's a wikia so likely yes you can edit it.

Now this is my kinda thread. I end up doing laborious research into differences and reviews for various versions of a game to find out what's been added or what's been removed and which sounds better yadda yadda so I'll be watching closely and providing support and resources where I can.

I'll start by posting this handy guide to Dragon Quest. Following this I played and completed many of these classics. If only every game series had something like this!

Aside from these kinds of infographics, there's also a great YouTube channel I've been subscribed to who does thorough port comparisons - though since it's just one guy you're at the mercy of what he feels like doing in terms of content.

You misunderstood me, I guess I wasn't clear: I meant the first PC version, for some bizarre reason, was port of an inferior PS2 port, not of the original Gamecube version... but later Steam re-port was from GC (easy to check, as it has prerendered FMVs vs realtime cutscenes).

PS2 version isn't bad by itself, it's the PC port was so bad (didn't even have proper mouse support), they had to port it again after. But there's no reason to play the PlayStation version now (unless you have real hardware) since GameCube is both easier to emulate and two modded PC versions exist.

Happy New Year!

That's the catch with a lot of lists. OG Castlevania has a sleeper remake on GBA that is arguably the defacto best version of the game unless you play "improved controls" patch. But... Then you find strange cases. So, with Castlevania, nearly half of the OG library (pre GBA) are reimaginings of the first game. Castlevania, Vampire Killer, Haunted House, Super Castlevania 4, Rhondo of Blood, Dracula X, Chronicles, Castlevania X68000... These are all "the first game" reimagined in different ways. The same is true for Castlevania 2 and 3 (each had remakes and reimaginings). Chronology is also iffy with many games. Caslevania 3, for instance, is a prequel.
