I'm excluding Three Hopes for now, as its scenario is divisive, and it feels like an Empires game in name only.

I think a Fire Emblem Warriors 'Empires' would be the ultimate, unrivaled fantasy Musou game, even though there's no sign of it being released yet. I'd prefer not to bring up Hyrule Warriors; it feels a bit stale.

Where do we draw the line at "Fantasy"? Just thinking that mainline DW/SW & something like Sengoku Basara are based in history, but are very... Anime superpower-y.

Otherwise, I can only think of One Piece: Pirate Warriors if we're not counting Three Hopes or Hyrule Warriors::thinking

Personally I vastly preferred Hyrule Warriors - not the 3 FPS clipshow that was Age of Calamity though. FE Warriors had way too little fantasy elements for my liking.
I prefer fighting moblins or whatever over faceless soldiers - Three Hopes was more fun to me, but the first game definitely has it beat with regard to replability!

That Berserk Musou was also pretty good for what it was as far as gameplay goes. Which is to say extremely limited to the point of feeling unfinished, but still!

I forgot about the Berserk one!
In that case, are we also counting the Attack on Titan games?
Hyrule Warriors Definitive on Switch would be my favourite, I'm just trying to think of others for the sake of the argument.

But that's the answer, imo (the very first one that is).
It's way more whimsical since you're fighting moblins and other goofy Zelda creatures, and it's got a billion hours worth of content with characters that look and feel super different, and not just, well, a bunch of Warriors, lol.

There's also DQ Heroes I & II

While good games, I still maybe wouldn't put them above Hyrule Warriors either.

Can't believe I didn't think of them.
The first one is quaint, but also pretty barebones. The second is insane, it's way more like an actual action-adventure game, only in a musou engine. It's got fewer musou-style maps and more just large zones you adventure around in.
Also, the second one doesn't include Yangus for some reason... 😡

Yeah, I was looking through a list of these and trying to determine what counted as a "fantasy" game. I forgot them too, even though I have played both ::sailor-embarrassed

No Yangi makes me angy (No Yangus makes me angry, in case my dumb rhyme needs translating) :loldog

It's such a genuine shame because his voice actor does such an INSANELY good job in it.
He's great in the original game too, but he's always so calm and mellow in that one, in this one he's just bursting with energy and it's so FUN

I love him so much

Hyrule Warriors definitely....stale or not, it is better than some of the Dynasty Warrior series.

I recommend you to try Hyrule warriors and Dragon quest heroes 1 and 2.

There are two "musou" from the Neptunia series, both on Vita, they put a character in front of lots of enemies... but it's Neptunia. I enjoyed the "U" action, never played the one with zombies. Maybe in the Warriors games there are more enemies, but this one has been fun too.

It's hard to play Hyrule Warriors after playing Fire Emblem Warriors. Going back to a game when you have useless allies and a useless army as opposed to Fire Emblem Warriors where people are actually pulling their weight and it's not just you doing all of the work. So no, I wouldn't recommend that.

The Dragon Quest games are probably the best suggestion. They have all of the fantasy rpg tropes including a party of characters, and you can summon monsters.

For all its popularity, Hyrule Warriors is actually one of the weakest musou games. I put many hours into it and enjoyed it, but after you've tried other games it's not very impressive. It doesn't hold up well. I haven't tried the second Hyrule Warriors game though.
