And what about the xbox 360? I was surprised to find the games for the ps3 in the "retro corner" of a game store in Melbourne. Sorry if similar thread already exists

Well, seeing as both are about two decades old now, yeah, they are.

I personally don't consider it retro because that's just me. But I'll also acknowledge it's arbitrary, really, since there isn't an actual definition of 'retro game console' and it's probably pointless to try and create one because...well you just can't.

Yes, I think objectively they could be considered retro, but personally, I don't feel like anything after PS2 generation is retro.

Well is certainly retro in another ten years yeah they now old now compare last ten years the ps1 is twenty it consider retro so ten years later ps3 and xbox 360 are now retro.

Age wise it is, but like some have pointed out, retro is subjective and varies from person to person albeit in personal ways.
It's all moot at this point, some will say it's aesthetic, others will say it's age, etc.

Personally I like to think of everything having a fine line where I just stop.
Like, I don't care if something is retro or what year it came from, but I feel that eventually I'll find a line where I just don't care about any and all new releases and just continue to enjoy movies, music and games to a certain year or generation or era.

I thought I already reached that point years ago, but I guess I'm still looking for that fine line.

This is the way it should be. It felt jarring to me that a system thats running something like The last of Us, Watch Dogs and GTA 5 among other games can be retro so i asked to see what this is all about

I otherwise dont care

Idk abt games being retro buut Its so good for emulation since u can play your psx and ps2 even psp games psp on is kinda broken tho but yea i think its retro when u think abt it idk abt you guys but retro for me is the games reminds u your childhood not just old or bad graphics retro means it takes you back to childhood thats why so much of us still has crt tvs instead of buying cheap HDMI adaptors So if u are young as me Ps3 is pretty retro but if u are older its hard to accept it as retro cuz it doesnt rlly takes u back.

Well... It's two generations old by now.

It's just WAY too awesome and full of great game for it to feel much newer than it actually is.

I think a decent litmus test is ask the question: If you were to go onto Steam (et al) and look up newer "retro style" games, what would you find? Would you find games with PS3 caliber graphics & aesthetics? Are you going to see games that look like 'Resident Evil'(2002)? No, you won't. You'll almost exclusively find games that have 16- or 32-bit inspired pixel art (like 'Sea of Stars'), and the occasional PS1-style "low-poly aesthetic" type of game (such as 'Iron Lung')..

I refuse to acknowledge the words "retro" & "vintage" as synonyms, because they're objectively not. Most of you guys are just using using the wrong word..

I was thinking of the 16-bits era as being retro before we got 16-bits looking and I saw the Saturn/N64/PSX as retro consoles a bit before we got low poly indies.

It will be hard to make a PS360 era looking indie game since this was when gaming started to cost more and I think that with modern looking indie game they could just pass as fancier XBLA games.

As an example while the resolution is higher than 720p I think that En Garde could somehow pass as a mid-budget Xbox 360 game made by a rather small company being published by a bigger one

Astebreed also has that vibe.

I also think that retro doesn't necessarily means that there are indie games produced with that style.

Retro means back so while they're not mutually exclusive retro can just mean something that isn't new. Vintage doesn't imply 20 years?

Cut off year for being considered retro is 2001. No, I won’t elaborate.
25 years ago? So by 2030 it would be 2005?

I’d consider it old more than anything. The actual definition of “retro” seems very nebulous and personal, in my opinion.
Here's a definition

Honestly...no. Old YES, retro, nope. Problem with "retro" tag is that it require 3 simple things. One, that is was hugely popular back them. Two, It is not like similar thing that currently exist today. Last, It can comeback and be indifferent distinct compared more recent similarities.

Also beware of the term "classic". That word is so undefined and could confuse anyone with anything.
