Is the Nintendo Switch 2 worth it?

It is absolutely not worth it yet. I'd wait until there's more than two games on it. I mean, I did buy it for literally just Donkey Kong because it looks amazing, BUT DON'T FOLLOW MY EXAMPLE!!!!!!

EVEN AFTER SAYING THAT I WILL ALSO SAY THIS: you can play the SEGA Ages version of OutRun on a big screen that's right in your face in the middle of the night after a long shift for like an hour and that's pretty good.

In a year or so the answer will be yes, but right now it's kind of a hard sell if you have any other modern platform to play games on. Not many exclusives and that won't really change for another year or two. Unless Mario Kart or Donkey Kong are your absolute favorite things on the planet and you NEED the latest entry in each franchise, you can wait a while.

I finally got around to trying out the improved Switch 1 games, namely Super Mario Odyssey, and HDR looks AWFUL on Switch 1 games. It's not real HDR, it appears like it just puts Switch 1 games in an HDR container. I have my settings correct on my LG OLED (72-73 clicks on first screen, 6-8 clicks on second screen), Switch 2 games look good, but I'll be turning off HDR when I play Switch 1 games. The colors are so dull and washed compared to SDR for these games.

It's a hard sell especially for those who a) aren't big Nintendo fans, b) already have a Switch, and c) already have other consoles IMO. It's basically a Switch pro to me, which is what the OLED already kinda was to me a year ago when I upgraded to it. I don't like having too many consoles and already have a million great old games to play, so I won't be buying one any time soon. If I want to play portable Cyberpunk, I'll play it on my Portal lol.

The only way I might be convinced to buy one is if the purported FFIX remake is a Switch 2 exclusive which is unlikely to say the least...Most third party exclusives are timed these days, anyway. Yes, I will be happy for the next several years with my OLED, PS5, and PC. Not that it will hurt Nintendo any...

Use that money to buy a Steamdeck OLED or Odin 2 Portal is my recommendation.
What's the price?

Also the issue is that I won't get Kirby Air Riders on them...

But like any newer consoles it's always better to wait 6 months if not a full year to see more interesting games on it.

Steamdeck OLED is $550, if you don't mind a LCD screen, $400. Odin 2 Portal Pro is also $400. Switch 2 is also $400-500 depending on if you get the pack in or not. I wouldn't be concerned with just one game for a system, considering what the Steamdeck and Odin 2 can offer you. With Switch 2, you'll only be limited to what Nintendo gives you. With the other 2, the World is your oyster. And if the Switch 2 ever gets *ahem* then you also have the systems to take care of that itch as well in the future, and even play Kirby Air Riders on it. Assuming you have the patience to wait for it.

Yes, I buy a Nintendo console primarily for the Nintendo games, that's nothing new and it's the case since at least the N64 (counting Rareware as a second party dev). My secondary use for the Switch 1 was for indies (and occasionally retro game compilations/remasters/ports) when they're in heavy sales but mostly for my favourite ones.

I know that it would but I categorically refuse to emulate a game that is still sold in store, I only go as far as the 3DS and Wii U (and PS360 although I could run the PS4 and Xbox One on my PC if I really want to try Bloodborn and Rare Replay).

Fair enough. Then my answer to you is to wait it out, until Kirby releases or any other game you might really enjoy, where you no longer have to ask that question to yourself, and have no doubt.

I'll probably buy one eventually to play stuff online with my friends. I definitely won't be collecting physically for it though, lol

Some of the reasons why I am not impressed with the switch 2. For starters I have a lot of multi region switch 1 games that I will not be able to use on it. Since it's region locked. Nintendo offers no right to repair. And no hall effect sticks because of the magnets on the joycons. The processor is just an ARM chip equilent to an old ps4. So we're talking old jaguar proccessing back to 2013. And this is why they won't have open world games on it. And there will be less third party games because it's limited on how many times you can write to the NAND chip. The LCD has some major input lag. I would rather buy a steam deck over the switch 2. Unless nintendo lowers the cost of the games and the system, it's a no go for me.

I wouldn't compare the gap between the Atari Jaguar and consoles from 2013 with a console from the early 2010's and today.

Zelda BotW was on the Wii U.

Although I'd also argue that it's not necessary that every Nintendo's first party IPs have to be Open World to be good. Maybe Pikmin could have bigger and more open ended maps but I wouldn't want every franchises to get the same treatment as Breath of the Wild.

In fact I think that semi-linear/"Closed World" (more akin to old gen MH or Zelda games like OoT) video games are becoming underrated in an ocean of Open World/Ubisoft-inspired games.

No no, PS4 CPU architecture was named Jaguar. It has nothing to do with Atari Jaguar. I believe the comment was to compare the performance of an A78 from Switch 2 with a PS4 CPU.

Although I would say the performance per core is superior on Switch 2 because the real clock is not 1Ghz whatsoever. When people is able to mod their Switch 2 they will unleash the power of its CPU and GPU in order to make the games work without hiccups or slowdowns. Now it can seem kind of "ohhh, it won't happen with Switch 2, because it's a totally new and more powerful machine". Don't delude yourselves, it WILL happen for sure.

The real question we should all be asking is: will the Switch 2 make Rune Factory 5 run consistently at an FPS above 20? Wait nevermind I looked it up and yes it does and also apparently it even cuts out the loading times.

If they ever remastered Rune Factory: Frontier then the Switch 2 could run every single good Rune Factory game.

Too early, too expensive, not enough games yet, needs more features. Also the whole "no used games allowed or else we'll brick your console" thing is a bummer too.

Ah my bad.

I mean some trolls out there are still telling that a Switch is merely a buffed up Wii when it's not exactly how it works. There's a technical gap but not one where you'd have a 128-bits era console today.

Where is that info from?

I thought it was about modding the console.

But that's not the device's problem, it's Nintendo's. I enjoy Rune Factory 5 at stable 30fps (it can run between 45-60fps but not stable) because I have put the console to the original chipset clocks. If you blame the device because you don't want to mod it, that's on your side then, because you accepted that the very moment you bought it and even being able to do something about it you choose not to.

I also want to know what do you mean by second hand games can brick your console. First time I've heard about that in life. Can you elaborate, please?

Well, actually Switch could be like a buffed up Wii U with more RAM :)

I remember that some 3DS games were made without any ability to "nuke" the save file (aka having a factory reset for a video game like with pressing ABXY + LR + Start or Select) such as RE Mercenaries 3D was a bad move for those who wanted to lend or sell their games.

Being able to entirely make it new when the game has a special intro (like how Nintendogs had you knock on the door or Mario 64 DS having a star in the middle of the screen) it was really cool to look at.

Well, actually Switch could be like a buffed up Wii U with more RAM :)
With that kind of mindset you could practically say that for 3 generations consoles have been buffed up versions of themselves.

The PS5 Pro could've been seen as the Pro version of the PS4 Pro and the Xbox Series are buffed up Xbox One S/X.

No no, this example is totally loable, because Wii U was a desktop console, and Switch is a portable console. It would be like comparing Super Famicom and GBA.

Technically speaking, Switch in undocked mode is weaker than Wii U (base Switch with official Nintendo clocks). Developers always develop games for the base version, like happened with PS4 and PS5, for obvious reasons. Taking that in count, we could say that every single Switch game could be adapted to be ran on Wii U, the only limitation we have to face is the amount of RAM, as I've mentioned before.

You have a clear example with Zelda Breath of the Wild. What happened at the beginning? that Wii U version was the clear winner, because the game was working like crap on Switch. Only patches made it better, but even so, when you compare both side by side there are ups and downs, so there is no clear winner at all. You could allege that the game was developed for Wii U, then Switch got a bad port. Well, I could buy that for a non 1st party game, but not for a Zelda, and let alone after so many patches.

So, having said all of this, you also were not very far from reality, but kind different. PS5 could be considered a buffed PS4 Pro, because if a developer had the money and the will to develop a game from scratch for both consoles, both games would look almost identical. What you would play 1440p on PS5, it would run 1080p on PS4 Pro.

Of course, with new hardware there are new technologies involved, but at the end of the day it's what you see on screen what matters, and if your eye can't differentiate one from another your brain automatically processes that it is meaningless to upgrade.

One user briefly got banned online for buying a bunch of used games off of Facebook marketplace and was testing them, apparently the amount of games being inserted tripped their system and they were banned but it was sorted out quickly when they contacted CS. Annoying, but far from secondhand games being not being allowed.

......unless there is something else I haven't heard about

Also I bought a Switch 2 yesterday. I wasn't originally planning to this soon but I had a lot of people asking me to play Mario Kart so I was like eh, why not.

Wow, that is actually funny. Maybe they thought the user was using a Mig Switch, because you have to reinsert one time per game lol.
