IRC

I was in #Capcom with the SoCali SF pros n aLL the friends in that reLated circle. some are nice to your face in person but become dickheads on IRC lol

I used to grab warez including emulation off IRC mid-to-late 90's n pirated albums too came through the hub we were grabbin from

also, there was a videogame trivia channel where I got to #1 dominating at a typing speed that had ppl accusin me of using macros lol yea right I had macros ready for any videogame title or term in existence xD shuRRR guyyzyzyzyzzzzzz O_o

Edit: I must also state... thanks to MS/TD motor control issues n hands/fists that have been put through the ringer's ringer - my typing speed is a smaLL fraction of its former gLory or w/e haha

I only used it for xdcc when I used to watch lots of anime >_>

I tried it recently but I honestly can't say I enjoy how restrictive it is. Or the hoops you have to jump through to set up a mailbox for messages received while offline. Also, a lot of the channels I was interested in are dead.

Maybe I'm too young but I honestly had no idea that still existed?! asoijsdaijds maybe I should check it out one of these days

I like the simplicity of it to be honest. Offline messages doesn't bother me as such on that as it's more of a chat while online kind of thing to me.

The simplicity wouldn't bother me if I felt it didn't stifle self-expression. Tone is already difficult to gauge in text even with the use of emotes.

It would have been nice to see more unicode emoticon usage but I think that's either dead or on life support.

I was a semi regular on one server and lurking here and there just a couple years ago. Eventually I stopped resisting and finally installed discord.
IRC is such a small niche community these days that joining a server often honestly feels like butting in to a group of friends as a complete stranger, and everyone is looking at you wierd.
I like it, I find it neat, but I just can't find a place for me there.

That's it right there.

I remember joining a channel at a friend's insistence and immediately feeling like an outsider because no-one would engage me first and would only give clipped answers until they warmed up to me. It was even the case on an old (now defunct) file-sharing site that had both a forum and an IRC channel. People on the latter would know you, but wouldn't engage because they were a distinctive minority just enjoying the corner.

I want to clarify that I don't even necessarily think that it's because people there are rude and unwelcoming or anything but it is just structured to be more free flowing casual discussion, like a group of friends chatting about whatever. Engaging people on forums is easy because it's a bit more formal, the topics are set on individual posts and everyone, even strangers are sort of expected to give their two cents on them within the set rules of the place.
You also have a lot more time to write and think your posts through which is a big thing especially when english is not your first language. Taking as long to write something like I did here would often mean that the topic just kinda moved on already and I'm left there wondering whether I should still bother with it or not.
