Indie titles that make for good stand-ins for bigger, more famous releases?

the second game has a lot of stank to it, i didn't mind it too much but the quality gap between 2 and 3 is just huge

2 has the better ending theme though
Honestly for a jump into 3D it's way less rough than most video game from the PSX/N64 era imo.

People are overusing the whole "Sonic had a rough transition into 3D" despite that there have been worse ones and that the first true 3D Sonic game was still praised.

Let me preface this by saying that yes, indie games work with limited resources, smaller teams and other constraints when it comes to game development, and while a lot of wonderful gems did (and do) reach us from indie studios, the wider industry will always have the advantage when it comes to raw resources.

Still, it is hard to deny the beauty, the heart and the ingenuity of indie titles, even when they thread roads well traveled, when these games are made with love, it feels like a familiar but new journey, a delightful rediscovery that nonetheless touches home, to those that know the source.

My example here is The Last Faith:

It self describes as a gothic metroidvania soulslike, which it is, and I'm sure the most astute among us immediately could pick up the major influence here. Yes, Bloodborne.

As such, is it groundbreakingly original, astonishingly innovative? no, but oh does it do these influences proud in gameplay, setting and feel. Everything is appropriately somber, dreary and lavishly animated and the game builds upon a lore much its own, with similar trappings and storytelling to the one Fromsoft wizards employ.

Does it reach the same pinnacles of greatness, of GOTYness? depends on who you ask, but the point is, to many (myself included) this is the closest they could get to a quality Bloodborne-esque experience because Sony won't unjail their baby, and in that role, I feel it succeeds brilliantly.

So that's my (admittedly passionate) answer to my own question, and I'd love to hear if from those that have had similar experiences (or if they haven't, all the same).
You should try Momodora bro. I’m kinda busy but I’ll give a detailed answer as to why it deserves to stand tall.

A lot of indie games have begun to advertise themselves as "spiritual successors" to dead franchises.

Wargroove :: Advance Wars
Card-en-Ciel :: Mega Man Battle Network
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk :: Jet Set Radio
Labyrinth of Touhou :: Etrian Odyssey
Gloomwood :: Thief

There are tons more, though I forget right now.

Iconoclasts: Metroidvania with Sega Genesis graphics and a lesbian deuteragonist, what more can you want?! It got left in the dust because it released really close to Celeste, a name that pretty much everyone knows now

Touhou ADiA: It's very unlikely Atlus will ever localise SMT 1 and 2 and Etrian Odyssey is currently in limbo, so this is a good substitute.

Gravity Circuit: It pleases me to know that even if whatever Capcom plans to do with Mega Man flops and it goes back into dormancy, I'll have substitutes

Neon White: AAA could never tbh. Even Doom isn't.

Ultrakill: see above, can't wait for the finished game

Them's Fighting Herds: never played it, I just find it insane this was a fangame first

Card-en-Ciel :: Mega Man Battle Network
Go play LunarLux, it's also a MMBN spiritual successor indie game

nicher pick but the dead dishwasher games are some of the most fun beat em ups I've played and visually are like no other games I've seen especially in the era they were made in (2009 and 2011 respectively). PRAYING the first game ends up on pc someday.

Today I learned of and wish listed a 13 year old game

Bloodstained is the best castlevania i have played, the Curse of the Moon Duology are the Best Classicvanias ever

Shovel Knight took everything i loved from Ducktales on NEs and flatout REFINED IT

Touhou games existed way before them, but since they still exists, i feel they have charm of "Quirky shump with goody story and characters with personality rather than plane that looks and shoot differently" that sadly has become rarer AFAIK

And not forget that Stardew Valley being (Harder, believe me, i tried it) Harvest Moon

i'm taking the piss with the quote, don't worry. i just thought it was a fun connection to draw

Record of Lodoss War-Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth is a great game. The best Metroidvania I've played in a long time
(Hollow Knight is hella overrated)
Agreed. Deedlit was great - (even more enjoyable having been familiar with the original ova). I Haven't played blade chimera yet but it looks great too.

I'd probably list deaths gambit as a souls like substitute. I was pleasantly surprised with the overall presentation, challenge (it's hard), and story/world/characters.

I also think that the Dust an Elysian Tale was a good substitute for the vanillaware type games. Simple gameplay with Rpg elements and a beautiful 2d world. For me it was a great sub for the itch that I was left with after muramasa.
