In This Thread I Will Finally Complete One Of The Greatest JRPG's Know To Man For The First Time (FF7)

The Whispers are just an external *thing* enforcing strict adherence to "remaking" FF7, temporal watch dogs basically. It's sloooooowly building up to revealing that someone, Sephiroth presumably, is changing the events of the original game to their benefit.

Suffice to say there won't be anything about that or timelines in the original.

But why does it exist? Its complete nonsense that detracts from the main themes of FF7.

1. Evils of unchecked capitalism
2. The fragility and transitory nature of life. AKA the lifestream.
3. The dangers of a nihilist with god powers. AKA Sepiroth wants to destroy the world. He shouldn't give a crap about timelines and nonsense.

If it doesn't connect to the main game's core themes, it doesn't belong in a "remake" of said game, in my opinion.

It is just kingdom hearts bullshit added to the game to fill the extra 120 hours added to a 60 hour game. Problem is FF7 was never like KH in themes or tone.

Tragically, I think it's just an excuse for Zack to be more involved with the events of the game for....a reason, I assume? I dunno, it isn't great. The weirdest part is, the first game builds to a climax where they "fight the future" somewhat literally, winning a battle with Sephiroth from Advent Children. Supposedly this means nothing is set in stone, and Aerith might live, buuuuuut they haven't actually changed anything in the second game? So, they aren't really doing a new version of FF7 at all? There's just a ton of alternate timeline stuff around the end, and Schrodinger's Aerith and Zack help Cloud beat the boss. It's so, so weird.

I'm not sure what you mean by timelines, I don't think Aerith talks about that in the original.

She says all that stuff in the remake, I think if I'm not wrong she states it in the last chapter 'Destiny's Crossroads' Where she explains that the Whispers are there to separate the differences in a timeline or at least thats what I got from what she said so don't take what I'm saying for what really happened but I guess what ATenderLad said is my answer

Right, but my point is that none of that is the original and none of it complements or adds to the story. As a matter of fact, it detracts from the important themes of the story, but I won't get into more detail until you finish the game.

As to why it was added, who knows. That is Nomura's MO. He doesn't care about story, it is all an afterthought to cool, superficial character designs. Sakaguchi and Kitase were the story guys and they aren't around (well Kitase is but he seems to have lost his mojo).
 
While I am loving FF7 so far I have to say that I HATE the random encounters dude. On the overworld I don't mind but I'm at a certain part where I just keep getting spammed with fights every ten seconds and it is SOO freaking annoying? Any way a bit off topic from the thread I think the next FF I'm going to play is FF12, reason being that the combat looks fresh and like something I haven't tried before and also I like the character designs and the story seems interesting anyway yea let me know if I should try a different one before that or something


I have gotten past Costa del Sol and am at like a roller coaster or something (?) making my way to the Golden Saucer

It doesn't detract from any of those themes though and actively contributes to 2 of them in very obvious ways lol

The KH comparison feels kinda random to me, you could put so many games in as an analog and FF7R doesn't really feel like its trying to be like KH in themes or tone.

Just go to another timeline and get another Aerith. Infinite Aerithses. Who cares if one of them dies?

Who cares if the world dies to a Meteor? There are infinite worlds out there.

Its extremely obvious you don't know how the multiple timelines system is presented or functions on any level within the story so there's no real point in talking abt it. Even if you were right it wouldn't really make any sense though. The fact that you want to talk about how the existence of multiple timelines somehow invalidates

Maybe a single timeline getting obliterated from existence still sucks even if other timelines exist because we have basic human empathy and can appreciate that an alternate timeline Gaia or Aerith are not the same Gaia and Aerith and that all lives in all timelines have value? Maybe the cast aren't the ones who can travel between and tamper with the timelines in the first place.

Highly recommend at least knowing what the story of something is before just typing up critique that is debunked by just playing or engaging with the themes of the thing at a base level.

I don't mean this in a mean way either I just don't rly see the point.

That would require me playing fully through Rebirth or watching a let's play and I cannot stomach that. Remake was abhorrent enough to me how they slaughtered the story and added whispers bs.

Damn you really think the remakes were that bad? I still honestly would prefer playing the remakes over the original so far but maybe its because I'm growing up with the remakes and I wasn't even born when the og came out so of course so I guess my opinion is invalid

I wouldn't go that far. Opinions are opinions, no one has the "right opinion". I don't expect anyone to care about story as much as I do. But they did butcher the story and the tone really bad. Some people may not care about these things, but it is hard for me to ignore the lack of care for being faithful to the source material. Even small changes can have a huge effect.

For example:
Shinra dropping the plates in remake instead of Avalanche doing a terrorist attack that causes civilian casualties. Completely alters the message that FF7 was trying to tell about terrorism.

Of course, someone who hasn't played the original wouldn't even know these things.
