Cyber City Oedo 808 and its dub have got to be one of the more memorable and bizarre OVA's. Both in terms of its execution and the extreme quality of said execution. With animation rivaling that of Vampire Hunter D and an over the top English dub that despite radically altering the original's script somehow manages to still remain spiritually intact with the greater body of work. Similar to Yu Yu Hakusho's. It produces a unique experience that is very enjoyable.

This is one I definitely should watch down the road. The way I'd do it would be to watch the episode in Japanese, then watch it again with the English dub, as it was localised at the tail-end of Manga's "fifteening era" where they often added in tons of F-bombs to their dubs to gain a fifteen/eighteen rating, often with mixed results. So for me, watching it with the intended dialogue and then watching it again with the edgier English script to see which works best and what the differences are is basically the way to go here.

Certified hood classic. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

It goes beyond simple f-bomb dumping. The entire script is pretty much reworked from the ground up to make the three leads and their boss into more classically English speaking (American) criminals. Basically an entirely different experience. Both are very good, but I prefer the English dub over the more subdued and philosophical Japanese version.

Huh. Well that's even MORE reason to watch each episode in Japanese first then again in English! It seems that since it was the tail end of their fifteening era, Manga Entertainment were actually trying a genuine attempt at localisation here by reworking the script to make the heroes American-style ex-cons rather than ex-Yakuza to elicit a similar response from new viewers, paving the way for their more faithful English scripts for stuff like Ghost in the Shell, Street Fighter II MOVIE and Macross Plus.

Great OVA. I think it was last year I watched it for the first time, only problem I had with it was there’s only 3 episodes lol.

Disagree hard on the dub thing though. Never liked that corny “Add as many swear words as we can to this script so people think it’s more EDGY and MATURE” old anime dubbing mindset from back in the day, always reeked of insecurity to me. Tbf I’ve always been the kind of guy who prefers to watch things in their original languages though.

I will say the soundtrack Manga UK did for their dub is pretty good though. It’s not like their Mad Bull 34 soundtrack, which I genuinely think is superior to the Japanese version, I think for the action scenes their music is better, but for everything else; the OG Japanese soundtrack is the way to go.

Yes, it's not half assed.
