We also have two Carolinas, two Dakotas and two Virginias for some reason. Maybe this is the reason why some people think we have 51 or 52 states instead of 50. They expect there might be an extra Idaho or Wyoming or something. Can you blame them? We already have extras of other states.

I won't lie, I laughed when I read the topic. In all serious, no cause you know how much it would cost the team if the UK had to fly to states to play. Besides they have Rugby, Cricket and several other profession sports US does not have. Also weird fact, but Japan does have a baseball and american football. Its not super huge professional, but they do actually have some teams. Learning about other countries are fun.

For the two Carolinas its because in the late 1600s and early 1700s, the southern reaches of the colony of Carolina were wealthy and populated while the northern parts were pirate infested and filled with "backwoods" people who were poorer and generally self-sufficient not contributing to a broader economy. So the English crown split the colony into two to protect the southern parts and focus attempting to develop the northern part.

For Virginia and West Virginia, its simply American Civil War related. Mountain regions of the south generally did not support the Confederacy and in Virginia, this opposition was organized and strong enough to break away from the state during the war, being admitted into the Union as West Virginia.
