I know the norm nowadays (by people who I think are jaded) is to say Video games suck. Things aren't great. There are problems in the industry. Truthfully, it be naive of me to argue there aren't issues. Ofc there are. But, I feel like this year and last year, (even when I was going through a big move) I played more games. And tried more games. Just not modern games. Maybe not every game I will try will be amazing or hit my personal standard. That's perfectly fine.
But, the thing with me, is that I trust my own hunch. And when something is worth it. Vs, when it's not worth it. Like, Bioshock 1,Bioshock 2, System Shock 1 & 2, Tony Hawk Rethawed (a mod of American Wasteland that has a ton of shit from the classic Neversoft titles) Tomb Raider 1 remaster, Pokemon Pure Red, a replay of Sonic Heroes, and these are just some of the things I tried recently.
All have been really fun imo. I think the general opinion I have, is even though in the modern AAA space (even my beloved Yakuza got hit by this with Kiwami 3) there aren't as many classics as years before, the Indie game space, the modern re releases that do exist like the modern TR remasters, the Nightdive remasters of System Shock and Quake, a lot of it has kept me really happy and fulfilled.
Hell, Aspyr's work on TR and Legacy of Kain I've been like, "This shit is gold." Plus, all those neat and interesting indie games I see on sale like Demon Tides I stop like. Focusing on the bad. The bad is still important. There's nothing wrong with criticism. Criticism is good and a necessity for improvement. What I don't like is doomerism. And me, as a nearly 27 year old man I'm happy not to give in. I'm happy to enjoy stuff I haven't tried. And to experience indie games when I get the money. I even think about those moments, where say. Jak 3 got ported to OpenGOAL recently. Or the Medal of Honor fan remake. And I say, "I'm glad to see this."
I guess at my age and my priorities in games I check out that I try to think more the positives than the negatives. I guess I can't blame people who are burnt out on certain trends in modern AAA games. That's perfectly fine. I just wanna more state that I'm happy to play video games. That it has helped me through the toughest moments of my life. I don't believe Video games will ever die. To me, no matter how corrupted certain companies are, there will always be cool shit to look forward to. Sonic Megamix mod for Sonic Mania is another one. Or, Denshattack! It looks cool. And it's why I follow channels too that try to be more positive than always overly pessimistic like Video Game Esoterica.
I guess for me and my specific tastes I'm happy being a nerd. Not worrying if a modern AAA game isn't that good. Well, maybe I'm past that point. Of worrying. Because there's so much other stuff I haven't played, haven't experienced, haven't even yet found yet. Ya know? Lots of freeware shit too. I mean, hell. Bomberman 64 HAS a PC PORT. By fans. I think that's cool. What can I say.
Like I said, these are just my thoughts. And I don't care anymore of overly pessimistic vibes. (It's like with films. You just gotta find the right ones. Don't pay for stuff you think doesn't meet your personal standards imo)

Also, I do think there is a golden age. But, I like to believe the indie creators will be the ones trailblazing a positive and optimistic path for games. Maybe not all of em ofc, (especially not the AI slop garbage. That can fuck off) but. Those who are caring and wanna make a difference I think already are. You should try to support new talent. And not feel remorse of the things gone. (Art is more than a product after all. It's eternal. It belongs to the people. To Gamers.
