Illusion of Gaia Retranslated (English Translation)

Nice seeing a 90s video game get a more accurate translation. Japanese to English translation at that time wasn't all that great in the grand scheme of things. Not to mention all the things the translators probably did to make the game "more appealing to an American market".

Just look at what they did to the original Persona.

Agree. The world is massive: "more appealing" is subjective to only a region.

But as usual, the argument is - localisation isn't translation by many people.

I hate it when they do that... I'd rather a 1:1 translation and then side notes of what minor oddities there are and why as a cultural learning exercise.

As an avid donut fan, I can honestly say..
This is blasphemy... this is madness!

Is this game known for having a poor original translation? What kinds of things were changed?
The Original Translation is overall pretty bad, it makes the story very difficult to understand and decipher.

A lot of the time because of ROM space (scripts using the latin alphabet take more space), time or budgetary constraints translators would need condense or rewrite massive parts of a script, which could result in a meaningless jumble or a script loaded with poorly placed pop culture references or outright made up lines (Working Designs...)

That said, I don't recall the particulars for this game. Maybe The Cutting Room Floor can shed some light onto this.

From wikipedia:

In accordance with Nintendo of America's censorship policies at the time of publication, several changes were made to the game to mitigate certain darker story elements. Most notably, the native tribe encountered near Angkor Wat was originally depicted as cannibals, with skeletal remains scattered around the village representing the remnants of their own tribesmen whom they had consumed to survive.

Religious references were modified or removed entirely. Will's school was initially overseen by a priest and held within a Christian church. The American release merely identifies the building as a school and replaces the cross with a statue. In the Japanese version, speaking with the priest prompts Will to recite a prayer. In contrast, the American version has the teacher leading Will in reciting a poem. A translation error in a sequence near the middle of the game suggests that Seth's consciousness has been absorbed into a sea monster named "Riverson". The Japanese version states that he has been transformed into a "Leviathan". Additionally, a line from the game's climax, where Will and Kara remark, upon seeing Earth from outer space, that this must be what it feels like to be God, was also removed.

A significant gameplay alteration is that the Japanese and American releases feature different bosses in the Sky Garden. In the Japanese version, the boss is depicted as a giant bird, while in the American release, it is a winged Babylonian statue with talons. It is suggested that the American boss aligns more closely with the creators' initial vision and relates to the idea that the Sky Garden was once the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The developers took the opportunity presented by the port to "tidy up" the boss, as they were dissatisfied with the bird-snake hybrid used in the original release.

In Europe, the game was released as Illusion of Time in English, German, French, and Spanish. Of these, only the French version underwent significant changes, incorporating references to existing people or myths, such as Edgar Degas, Franz Kafka, Chrysaor, and Nosferatu.

I never understood nor agreed on religious and name changes (always going to be Tina and Mash to me).

When I was a child playing all these games, those with religious themes being more outright put forth, with death and church etc (Breath of Fire 2) got me much more keen on the game.

And if anyone wonders, I am from Singapore.

It's because Americans have a strange hang up about children knowing things like religion and death exist.

And yet parents drag their kids to church, and you deal with meat all the time. And those that live on farms and have to butcher, it's far less hidden.

I think it's more, those subjects should be topics when they are a little more mature. Though it does make pokemon confusing. 'The pokemon fainted!' then why can't i just shove it in the ball? That always annoyed me. Then you realize it probably used to say 'The Pokemon Died' but having 8 yearolds asking what death is seems a little early.

Though you get this dissonance when you put them together...

I still got to take time to replay this game, which I'll be using the new translation for. I kind of wish the title screen didn't say "retranslated" and it was placed elsewhere and it had the option of the original logo above Will and Kara.
