A very interesting project. I'll admit I was a bit cynical after their first video, mainly because it seemed to be solely a UI concept presentation with no actual development work having been done. At the end of the video, it sounds like they have made some good progress and gotten some people on board, so I'm much more optimistic this might actually see the light of day, although I'd still be
very surprised if they hit that 2026 Q2 date they mused about.
Some other thoughts
- The UI as a whole is very well thought out. It's a solid mix of elements from the Wii U, 3DS, and PSP/PS3, as they mention, combined with more modern UI trends.
- I like their icons a lot, they did a solid job with those. They said they'd offer them as a download today, but last I looked their link had gotten locked for too much sudden activity lol
- It sounds like a minor thing, but where are they getting some of these assets from? There are several sources that have box art graphics for most games, but I don't know of any that have square ones like they displayed here. I certainly don't know of any that have short audio preview clips like they showed off.
- I just find it funny that if you weren't in the scene, the RetroAchievement support might seem like the most magic, but it's probably one of the easiest things for them to add
- Music integration is also a fun and clever idea, I like that. Same with the RSS feed support. Both are relatively straight-forward to add, but adds a lot of benefit to users. I would certainly use both features.
- Friend lists are a nice addition, and probably not too horrible, but the iiSU Network stuff seems like by far the most complicated to add (probably why they said it won't be in the initial release). They want to create their own Miiverse + Twitter + IM clone, on their own servers, and will need to handle all the moderation for it.
- $5 is wild for the premium version. If it does everything it says, I'll buy copies for all my friends. I do wonder if those points they had in the shop are some sort of microtransaction purchase though, they didn't give any details on it
- I would've liked to see some UI about key binding configuration. It's something that sounds simple enough, but I find a lot of frontends handle very, very poorly.
- I hadn't heard of Pictochat before and downloaded it to see. I think their servers are being swamped from this, it loads very poorly and I got a few errors. Likewise, I went to sign up to make an iiSU account, just to see what it was, and didn't get past the email confirmation portion, I assume for the same reason. I'll try again later once their servers aren't being hit as hard.
Overall, I'm tentatively excited. If they didn't mention a potential release date, or mention they actually had an alpha build, I would've said this was going to be vaporware (and it still might be tbf), but watching this has gained my interest a lot.
IKR! i just hope nintendo doesn't come and slash this.
Nah, this isn't the type of project Nintendo would go after. I know they sort of have a reputation for being a bit of a boogyman, but the things they shut down follow a very specific pattern, and this isn't it.
