when it comes to software i add of course the Homebrew Browser, USB Loader, i forgot what it was called but the thing that allows you to install WiiWare and Virtual console games, then dedicated emulators for NES, SNES, GB/C, GBA, Master System, GameGear, Genesis and PCEngine would do more emulators if i knew they worked well.

hardware modding would probably be the HDMI video mod and i can't really think of anything besides that

Speaking of games, I've added the sequel of the game "Another Code" for ds, almost one year before the announcement on Switch.
I had played the ds game and always been curious about the sequel (that I haven't liked as much as the original, though); after finding a cheap and used wii at 20$, I decided to go and try the mod.
I also tried some other games, especially "The Last Story" which I was also very curious about, but in this one I didn't felt at ease with combat system so I quit.
After a short time I've sold the console at 15$ and never regret it, after all I wanted to play that sequel and I played it and so I'm fine with it.

Nothing outside of the necessities to play Wii/GameCube backups. I like my Wii just as close as Vanilla as it can as my modt favorite part about modding is the abillity to dump the plethora of games we have and play them without ever touching the disc.

Wish I could mod in Gamecube Controller support on vWii (the Wii mode on Wii U).
I got a Wii U recently, and I was surprised to find out that it doesnt actually support the Gamecube adapter natively, even with its own software (though support for it and other USB controllers can be modded in). However, due to the way the Wiis OS is structured, its unlikely at best that the same support will ever be added to vWii, which is very sad honestly, as I rather like the Wii U.

If you mean a stock Wii, mine's already modded out the yin-yang, so nothing actually.
If you mean something that it can't do by modding as it stands, probably the ability to add an M.2 SSD or at least a SATA SSD. I hate using a USB/external drive for backups on the damned thing.
Also, as @RageBurner said, standard controls.

I hate the damn Wii remotes, they suck down batteries like (thinks) well, there are children present, so let's say they suck down batteries like Sonic does chili dogs.

Switch games demakes.

I'm dead serious but I would love to see an even more downscaled BotW.

Edit: my bad, if you meant hardware modifications then I'd settle for a proper Nintendo Sega Namco Triforce support.

A battery powered by orange juice, so I can give the Wii some orange juice View attachment 89655
I would offer it electrolytes

Oh and adding a Wii U tablet backward compatibility just so you could see the game's screen with a touch screen working like the wiimote.
I agree, the Wii U offers more for emulation but it can be a pain regarding external drives & vWii but its totally worth it. There is a trick for the external drives to keep it from formatting.

Suck them down like coca-cola

A proper, full speed DS emulator that allows you to connect compatible games to their WiiWare counterparts (WarioWare D.I.Y. Showcase, Pokémon Ranch, etc.)
