Goals:

Therapy. It’s therapeutic to me. That’s why.

Style and personality:

I draw for the fun of it. But I’m also really shy (shocking coming from me, I know), I’m not always comfortable sharing my own art but I’ll probably do it eventually.

Plans:

Just draw… something. Get my feet wet again, so to speak. My last time I drew anything was four years ago which is really crazy.

I think it's better to know what you like to draw, what you usually love to see, what's your inspiration?

Don't be shy man! I'm sure it'll look good. But of course, take your time…if you're still uncomfortable to post it then don't force yourself

I hope you're doing better with it ::dkapproves

Gather in a folder art from other artists you like or the type of drawings you want to do, it really helps to when it comes to "knowing what to draw" it helps with motivation too, as for the sharing part, yeah, that comes with time I guess, I'vebeen living from my art for a while now, I still feel weird showing it to people. But if you are doing it for yourself then there is no rush, hope it helps

Thanks guys. Great feedback. This might sound weird but uhhh I might close this thread to avoid distracting from other threads. Don’t wanna hog the attention and would prefer to just stay focused on productivity.

Awww gee thanks <3

As a layman with terrible drawing skills my main piece of advice comes straight out of the cookie: be patient with yourself, keep your goals flexible, don't be afraid to switch things up and lastly remember tracing and copying are useful skills; like gaming, drawing is partially intuition, partially mechanical feedback.

I love cookies, they’re delicious, so your advice is good

Like the Nike commercial said: Just do it!

Start with something simple or something you are very familiar with. Draw from a reference and pay attention to the lines, the curvature and the proportions. Don't focus so much on the actual object you are drawing but getting the lines, curves and proportions right. Close one eye and look at the reference, use your pencil to get proportions right, (example: the body is half a pencil, the head is 1/4th, etc...) and also get the rough angles of lines.

Nike ads are that inspiring! ::dkapproves

I really like your way of teaching, great and fun challenge

Step one - get yourself a sketchbook and a bunch of pencils/crayons.

Look, I had to, someone has to be the jester. Good luck with getting back into it. I want to see what our resident speed king draws.

Drawing is indeed very good for you

I’ll try to give better advice then just do it but honestly some pretty good advice especially when starting.

Take from what you love, don’t feel scared to redraw images/copy (it’s just for you after all), it’s useful for studying how the art you admire is made, so you can take that into your own toolbox. Drawing from real life is good aswell, just draw random things around you, a tree outside, a pencil on your desk. Draw everything and anything till you find what sparks interest (growing up it was pokemon, now it’s people)

Most importantly have fun, I have found the biggest struggle for artists new and old is that they feel the need for perfection, leading them to struggle to continue making art . It’s hard to move past it but remember no matter how bad, or embarrassing or what not it’s not a waste of materials, or time because you still made something.

The most helpful thing I’ve heard regarding art is

“We all have 10,000 bad drawings in us. The sooner we get them out the better.”
-Walt Stanchfield

But it sounds like you have the right idea of things, good luck. Can’t wait to see what you create if you’re comfortable sharing.

That's a really great tutorials, advice and quotes

It's like the Bruce Lee's version of saying like "I fear not a man who has practiced 10 000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10 000 times, it's really fitting!
As others have said, you just draw. Even if it's just doodling on a napkin or something. I used to draw fairly often and have completely lost whatever skill I had back then, heh.
That reminds me a lost memory! I remember back in the day, grabbing a random tissue and then started drawing

Sometimes, even I'm confused and curious about my younger self

Personally, what got me back into drawing was my wife gifting me a set of acrylic paint markers. Then just screwing around I accidentally discovered some of them reacted to a black light because they were neon. This got the juices flowing and now I'm drawing and painting almost every day.

I guess just try and find something that excites you or something mew to try.

I recommend trying charcoal you can get sticks of it, there’s just something less formal about it that feels more freeing, can be messy though. I personally like water colour for a similar reason, I can get a lot down well not using very much.

Sounds like a really supporting wife! I'm glad that you got such a great partner with hobbies, happy for you man! ::yay

art is an extremely fulfilling hobby. i personally draw digitally. my initial recommendation is to do image studies of art you think is good, attempt to replicate it without tracing or overlaying it at all. if you also draw digitally, i recommend that you practice doing linearts and then practice painting them. the advise people give you about drawing rotating shapes in perspective is legitimate BUT it's unnecessary dont enjoy it. if you only draw for your own enjoyment, you can advance those fundamentals by finishing pieces over time. that is mostly advice for people who want to learn art with the goal of working in the field later on.

also, when you want to draw something do 3 very rough sketches with different layouts and expand on the one you like the most. you will develop better posing and improved eye for composition this way, which is actually most artists biggest issue.

if you really only do it for enjoyment and therapy, you can just do image studies forever. they are really, truly fun.

and please for the love of god keep your art, keep practice sheets you like and keep finished pieces. even if you dont like it. keep it and label it with the date. when you feel hopeless you can look back and see your improvement, and it will always be there to be seen because you're always improving somehow.

I can only recommend the advice I follow for my writing:

Don't be afraid, and don't be apologetic. Own it, and never stop creating.

I’m not always comfortable sharing my own art but I’ll probably do it eventually.
hey, me neither, but literally in an instant, just by knowing RGT-tan, I drew and started publishing that without thinking. It was literally super spontaneous, and also my first time! I hope to see your creations soon too.

I remember that, until last year, I hadn't drawn for years, and one day I just decided to do it again, although I still had to endure all the frustration and a... strange feeling that sometimes made me want to cry, but somehow, I kept doing it.

I don't know what you might like, but you should start drawing what you like, just like I drew RGT-tan, and you better start soon, today is the day, ma frend! If I could, without a doubt you can!

The way to think your drawing in the beginning is look good is
1-shapes try and draw different shapes in different sizes and orientation
2-line principle how thick how light where to put the line
3-draw from reference from manga from comic books from an artist profile

And take your time in sharing your art because one day you will draw something that you just gotta shar in here

Damn, me too lmao
I guess RGT-Tan just brings the best out of us ::peek

Oh look who made a topic about this :3

Feel free to slide into my DMs if you want personal guidelines.
@wilddogsdivorce already made some good points.

What I want to add is to draw for yourself and not because people might like it or likes and thumb ups on the internet.
