Its a gameplay first rpg, more of a dungeon crawler with some twists added to the gameplay, the story isn't its strong point, the 7th Dragon series is all about having fun experimenting with team compositions, the game is difficult, but its meant for the player to find ways to break it by using party members effectively, the 2020 and 2020-II ones resemble SMT in some things, and, for the artstyle, locations and dragons are pretty cool.

Really underrated game with amazing combat and all the important characters.
Only bad thing is that its only in Japanese, but i dont think its a big deal for a fighting game, and if you know the real story from the manga or the anime then its enough to understand what its happening since it follows the manga events (and the canon stuff from the anime)

Here's my personal recommendation that are actually obscure enough to miss the radar for most article.

First is 7th Dragon 2020 and 7th Dragon 2020-II, this is actually the game that kickstart my "New World Project", which is playing random games that I never heard of before, and finish it whether I love or hate it. And I ended up LOVING the experience, to a point actually getting myself physical copy of 7th Dragon Code: VFD (3DS Game).

7th Dragon is a game about humanity getting wrecked by dragon and flower that could incap you just by the scent of it, and uncover the mystery behind it in turn-based dungeon crawler with a twist that all Dragon enemies can act twice in a row making the gameplay can be very challenging. It's not as hard as something like Nocturne, but hard nonetheless.

Next up is Last Ranker. Do you love Valkyrie Profile? Then you came to the right place, buddy. Last Ranker have similar gameplay to VP in addition to being able to block (and I think parry too), and you need to spend your action point to workaround enemies defense than breaking it.

The story revolve around Zig, the man who decide to leave his village and travels before series of event that makes him joining a ranking system to reach Rank 1 as the strongest fighter. I actually dumbed down the sypnosis since I don't want to spoiler the major plot point too much.

Then here we are with the most frustrating entry, Carnage Heart EXA is a game about programming your robot to move, attack, defend, move diagonally, attack while moving, attack while moving diagonally, defend while moving, defend while moving diagonally, and every action you could think of. But that's not it friend, because your puny human reaction is slower than the almighty fully automated programmed robot.

Yes, you hear that right. You know the basic of moving the robot by you? Throw that shit away and PROGRAM THE THING FULLY AUTOMATED! Not only all the aforementioned action, but also to scan enemies, swap weapon, jump, chasing, ammo preservation, and literally every action you can think of (as long it's within the game parameter)... you can program it to the way you wanted to be (as long you actually paying attention to the tutorial).

You need at least to have PhD, high IQ, and watch Rick and Morty to play this game.

Have you ever dream of interactive storytelling that actually good? Are you looking for story about time traveling and change the outcome of your future? And you looking for sexy hot homunculi? Then I have the right game for you, buddy, it's Shadow of Destiny/Shadow of Memories (also available on PC).

You plays as Eike in fictional German town Lebensbaum, as he died for seemingly unknown reason until a hot homunculi reveal to him that he was killed in the past timeline, and given Z-Pad to travels between specific timeline where you need to prevent your past-self getting killed without directly interacting with your past-self.

Genuinely one of the best interactive story-telling I've ever played that keep me on the edge of my seat.

Despite all being from the same developer, each game plays completely differently.
"Riviera" revolves around exploring and completing dungeons within a specific set of turns.
"Yggdra Union" is a strategy RPG with heavy focus on troop formations.
"Knights in the Nightmare" is the most non-traditional game by being a combination of puzzle and SHMUP. The player is a wisp that cannot attack directly, but instead places knights around the map before the battle and then possesses the stationary knights while also trying to dodge enemy attacks. Definitely play the tutorial first.
"Gungnir" is an isometric tactical RPG that I have not yet played. But it is on the PSP and from the same developers so I am including it.

Now, I know you specifically asked for no MG'S', but have you tried MG'A'?
