I'd say that SRB2 is quite original by itself.It's not like all of the Sonic fan games are just copies of the old games.
Technically Sega got it right with the Speed levels in SA1&2 and the Boost levels in Unleashed, Colours and Generations (and probably the Cyberspace levels in Frontiers), it's just that they have bad execution or stuff that makes the experience worse.There have been at least a few Sonic fan games that had him moving around a 3D environment, and honestly they had a really food understanding of how controlling a really fast character should work in a 3D space, right down to the level design and layout.
I can't even remeber the names anymore, but I remember playing one or two of those fan games and thinking that Sega should just hire the fucker to teach Sonic Team how to make Sonic work in 3D.
