As a weeb and a fan of ATLUS RPG game i absolutely love STING as a studio itself i have played several games for myself such as Dokapon, Riviera, Yggdra series and knights in the nightmare, oh and also baroque, because the game gives me this unique gameplay and replayability. And also on several games i said they are pretty much just anime plot but on different genre.

For example i love the gambling mechanic in dokapon ( i know it's frustating to basically playing turn based RPG and somehow rock paper scissor decide your entire fate ) but heck i'm there for the experiences

In Yggdra even tho this games are super cryptid to gain certain item and ending but the battle mechanic and cards usage was pretty fun to play with like i can terraform the map if i play my card correctly.

As for Riviere i like the grind broo the fact that i can gain skill by mastering certain equipment and each equipment or item will have different effect depending on who's using it. And somehow in the knight in nightmare it's also basically the same system but instead of your basic Tactical RPG you also play a bullet hell (ngl it's super challenging and fun).

And Baroque well i just there for the lore lol i love a story heavy and super challenging game in this game capture both of those (still it's super frustating to play that thing).

I just wanna say this since you know the recent RGT Nostalgia Forum have Baroque as nomination soo might as well talk about the other games.

*Puts away my wrestling merch*
I got too excited thinking this was a thread about my boy Sting.
This game is on my list to check out I just never got around to it.

I am big fan of dept heaven series like Riviera and Yggdra Union (I also like the artist who created my favorite anime GA Art Design Class and manga Shoulder a Coffin Kuro)

I really love the battle system of Yggdra I got lucky to have Yggdra on level 6 attack those revolution card are killer.

I'm acutally being meaning to play through the Dept. Heaven games but I find them quite confusing on which order or version to play.

There's GBA versions, DS versions, PSP and even Steam releases for some of the games. Kinda overwhelming.

I tried to play Gungnir but I couldn't even grasp the game mechanics and the fact that all the main character's friends are executed in the begining of the game really threw me off and I ended abandoning the game. Maybe I wasn't in the right headspace at the time but I'll pick it up again one day.

Question is: what game and what version should I give a try first? Any tips?

The Steam releases of Yggdra Union and Riviera are kinda pricy for games originally released more than 20 years ago tho

Dept Heaven is actually the name of the franchise, I think it flashes that at the start of each.
Riviera: The Promised Land is Episode I
Yggdra Union is Episode II
Knights in the Nightmare is Episode IV
Gungnir is Episode IX
They're supposed to be in order of how unique they are, but we don't know anything about the other numbers other than III is supposed to be an MMO, which good luck with that Sting lmao.

I have this game Hexzy Force JP version.

His Bass playing is pretty good, and he sued Vanilla Ice. Also some of his solo albums are good.
I guess his roles in "Dune" and "Life's too Short" are my favorites. Also I like the P-Bass.

Baroque is an all-timer for me. I also grew up playing Evolution on the Dreamcast. Getting to the end of that was my albatross as a teen. I got to the last boss, but was so fried on the combat that I didn't bother doing the grinding necessary to win. Still, I have a lot of fond memories of that game.

I always wanna try those games cuz their gameplay seemed so interesting.

Evolution! Riviera! & My all time favorite Baroque <3 what a great company; I just wish they were still so prolific as they once were..or atleast would release more of their modern Baroque ports in the west!

Dept. Heaven series, I loved it and I always recommend it!
I played them in no order, just as I was discovering them (Riviera on gba emu, KitN on ds, Gungnir and then Yggdra on psp), but I think "Riviera" should be now played on PSP/Switch version.
For KitN I recommend trying DS version, if possible, touch screen helps.

To this day I'm still pissed we never got Blaze Union and Gloria Union localized in English. Yggdra Union was great but you can really feel the storytelling there was rather barebones without the prequel.
They patch so many retro games, maybe someone will patch these ones too, who knows. Let's hope!

Without Milanor, it won't be the same

Thanks, I never heard of that until now.

Also Knights in the Nightmare was pretty cool too, nice to see it ain’t forgotten.

I haven't beat Yggdra union and Knights in the nightmares yet, but i like Dept. Heaven a lot.

I wish that the stories were a lot more intertwine each other.

It actually got a remaster in 2022. Problem is, said remaster hasn't been localized.

Knew about them because of Baroque and that game is still a cool concept for the time. It really felt like "Roguelikes before they were cool".
