The original Sandlot belongs to a very special category I like to call "Sunday Flicks" — those are good (but not necessarily great) films that you can put on, have a good time with, and generally enjoy without having to devote too much of your time or attention to them.

There's a lot of merit to being a low-effort kind of entertainment and some of my favorite movies belong in that very category.

The Sandlot 2, however, is just not a good film.

It's like the writers took a look at everything that made the original click and decided that those parts weren't necessary for the machine to run, leaving behind a sputtering shell of a flick that whirrs and groans every time it moves.

It is, thus, very unfortunate that those problems crystallize in the exact scene that was supposed to be the point from which the story pivoted into something more.

Please, skip to 5:37 on the following video to witness the source of my childhood grief:

Look, the movie had already made a ton of dumb and glaring mistakes way before we even reached this point (which stands at almost the exact center of its runtime, which is kind of the right call for a key moment but also means that the all-downhill path that follows is both long and gruesome) but this is something else entirely.

I mean... why is the kid getting mad in the first place? The framing and narration of the scene make it look like Singleton (the only character I can remember by name) is full-on assaulting the girl, but the actual footage shows a VERY light tap to her body that the actress does a phenomenal job trying to sell... except that it doesn't work.

And, to add insult to injury, the movie itself takes place at a time when runners and catchers duking it out at home plate was seen as a perfectly normal (even exciting) part of the game, so it doesn't even abide by its own alleged rules.

Don't believe me? Here's a good compilation (one of many):

But also... why wasn't there an old-fashioned brawl after Singleton gets punched? The movie takes place in 1972 for fuck's sake! I remember getting my hands dirty for way less offensive stuff in the mid-aughts!

Ugh! Such a dumpster fire.

Anyway... thanks for reading my nerdout xD

I hate the carnival scene in the original Sandlot. I really dislike puke jokes.
