I recently got an OG Xbox from the store I work for, this is my first time ever owning an Xbox, what should I get?

As the title says I recently got an Xbox, I got Halo 1/2, Counter Strike, JSRF/SegaGT, and Ninja Gaiden. I am a big Sonic fan so I know of the games that came out for it and intend on getting them. I mostly grew up with Nintendo, SEGA, Playstation so I don't really know too much about Xbox in general. I know there are certain games like SMT NINE and the port of Half-Life 2 I want to play, but ultimately I just want the good ol "OG Xbox experience"

So what are some games that made the Xbox so iconic back in it's heyday?

I love the original Xbox, I still own mine! You got JSRF and Ninja Gaiden already, so let me add:
- Gun Valkyrie
- Panzer Dragoon Orta
- Midtown Madness 3
- OutRun2006: Coast 2 Coast
- KOTOR I & II
- Jade Empire
- Splinter Cell 1, 2, 3 and 4
- DOA 3
- Super Monkey Ball Deluxe
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer
- (Edit): Otogi 1 and 2

I probably forget many games, but this is a great start I think!

If you want the core OG Xbox experience, grab these:
  • Fable
  • Crimson Skies
  • Project Gotham Racing 2
  • MechAssault
  • Knights of the Old Republic
  • Panzer Dragoon Orta
  • Otogi
  • Breakdown
  • Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
  • Dead or Alive 3

Some Sega fans consider the Xbox to be a spiritual "Dreamcast 2" due to Microsoft's involvement in the DC's development and how multiple games on the DC got ports or sequels (i.e. Crazy Taxi 3) on the Xbox.
It's totally not. The Dreamcast had such a different vibe and nothing about the Xbox really felt like Sega.

Yeah that's actually why I got it,I always wanted play JSRF ever since I played the original JSR, and I'll always appreciate the Dreamcast

I don't know much about modding an Xbox, but I hear you can do a lot of fun things with it if you do.

THANK YOU finally someone says Buffy. Totally underloved title.

They're extremely different games. I actually don't personally like Future despite loving the original. Still got style for days though and it controls much better.

Anyways, as for more suggestions that I don't think I've seen yet

Ninja Gaiden Black
Tenchu Return From Darkness (it's like 90% the same game as Wrath of Heaven on the PS2 if you've played that)
Fatal Frame 1 and 2 (also on PS2 but the Xbox versions are marginally better)
Max Payne 1 and 2 (dramatically better than the PS2 versions)
Burnout 3 and Revenge are basically identical on both PS2 and Xbox, but if you've never played them they're excellent.
Fable The Lost Chapters is the expanded version of Fable, there's not much point in getting the original release at this point.
Thief Deadly Shadows

EDIT: Forgot Grabbed by the Ghoulies, that game gets slept on a lot but it's actually a really fun take on the beat-em-up genre.

Original Ninja Gaiden was the best, Black is annoying. Both NG 1 and 2 are better in their original forms before all of the bullshit changes came along with Black, Sigma, etc.

I have a copy of Buffy for the Xbox. It was fun. Trailer was pretty cool too:

I played the sequel too. It was a buggy mess but playing as Sid the Dummy and Willow was fun and I don't know if any other Buffy game lets you play as Faith.

I never understood why JSRF changed the leader of the group, but whatever. One of the best title screens of all time

I feel like Black is dramatically better than the original personally, Sigma not so much. Black massively overhauls the way higher difficulties are handled though, giving the bosses faster and extended attack strings, introducing new enemies, changing up when you get various items, and overall making the game far more kinetic and aggressive. The original release just makes everything a massive damage sponge that two or three shots you on Very Hard it kinda sucks.

I never had any problems on master ninja difficulty in the original release. Charged ultimates, flying swallows, and counterattcks into izuna drops took care of mostly everything except maybe those obnoxious ghost fish.

Black just made everything obnoxious, and some of that carried over into NG II unfortunately but I still had a lot of fun with NG II.

If you for real oddities on the system and wanna play something more obscure :

- Metal Dungeon
(Really solid dungeon crawler JRPG without a huge story but 10 Dungeons to conquer , rouge-like elements , grounded but tough and was the first JRPG that had an automatic battle-system which you need to learn to get into . Not a high calibre one but one that is really cool on its own .)

- Blinx : The Timesweeper
(Tough but great 3D Platformer with a time mechanics to defeat enemy in different approaches and conquer the levels . )

-Brute Force
(Its Gears of War for the thinking man . Way much more tactical but very fun if you understand how to use the squad effectively and Brutus is best lizard-bro ever . VEEEEENGAAAAAR !!!! )

-Quantum Redshift
(Microsofts version of Wipeout . Great Racer and unintentionally funny character interactions combined with their random animations makes this game a special one that should be checked out too . )

-Unreal Championship 2
(Do you like Unreal Tournament but you wanna have some interesting spin on it ? Then this game has everything you need and more . Its actually a hero shooter before overwatch and Team Fortress 2 but in the Unreal Tournament Universe and its more movement based while you have there even Fatalities in this game too . EVEN THE ANOUNCER OF Mortal Kombat deception can be selected as the commentator . Underrated and awesome . )

-Crimson Sea
(The only game i never really touched while i still own it . Its more like Gungage with extra steps . But look it up . Maybe its up your alley . I need to play sometime too . )

I remember posting a thing on twitter about the Buffy game a couple years back, and some of the old dev team replying with info about how the sequel went, and it sounded like they were snakebit the entire time, so it didn't quite reach what they had envisioned.

I had this, I remember it being pretty okay, switching between shooting and melee and the designs being cool

R Racing Evolution
The Def Jams wrestling games, but they're two of the more expensive titles
BMX XXX actually is better than I remember it being
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Breakdown
Crimson Skies

Master Ninja isn't in the original release, that was added in Black alongside Ninja Dog. It only has Normal, Hard, and Very Hard. It also doesn't change anything about the content as you go up in difficulty beyond the number of waves of enemies it throws at you.

This means it completely lacks some of the things that only show up in Black's higher difficulties, such as the ability to knock the Chapter 2 boss off his horse to fight him on the ground, the Ishtaros and Nichae boss fights, the Fiend Ryu matches, the bast fiends, the triceratops ogres, and the berserkers

Black also has the Mission Mode once you've completed the game which the original completely lacks. It does lack the SNES Trilogy ROM to play, but that port isn't exactly the best anyways unfortunately.

Less is more. More stuff doesn't equal better. And I always just think of the hardest difficulty of these games as Master Ninja, so I made a little mistake there.

some of my favorites you might want to try (depending on the genres you like) include:

Panzer Dragoon Orta (third person Rail Shooter and IMO one of the best games ever made, but hard as balls as it goes on) Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast (racing, still my favorite racer ever), Dead or Alive 2 and 3 (fighting) plus its volleyball spinoff Extreme, Republic Commando (squad FPS), DarkWatch (FPS), Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind (RPG), Gun Valkyrie (Sega made third person shooter with awkward controls, but fun once learned), Otogi 1 and 2 (From Soft made action hack and slash based in Japanese myth/ hell), Kingdoms Under Fire- Heroes and the Crusaders (both are kinda hard to explain, kinda action/ strategy.. maybe like a musou mixed with a real time strategy?), Gungriffon- Allied Strike (mech game, part of a series), Daisenryaku 7: Modern Military Tactics (one of the very, very few english localized games in this long running series of turn based strategy, Advance Wars is a more colorful version of this series), Sid Meier's Pirates! (pirate simulator, really fun remake of an older really fun game), Spikeout- Battle Street (3D beat em up), XIII (FPS), Phantom Dust (hard to explain 3D arena fighter with powers, maybe?), and of course Ninja Gaiden

plus the other games that are available elsewhere or have better versions or everybody generally knows like Ghost Recon 1 and 2 (plus their expansions), the Splinter Cell games, Dead to Rights 1 and 2, Bloody Roar Extreme, Samurai Shodown 5, King of Fighters 2002 and 2003 as well as Neowave and Maximum Impact, Guilty Gear X2 Reload, Crimson Skies, Crimson Sea, Arx Fatalis, House of the Dead 3, Outlaw Golf/ Volleyball series, Tenchu- Return from Darkness, Red Ninja- End of Honor, Vietcong- Purple Haze, Men of Valor, Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2, etc etc plus loads of great collections from Capcom, SNK, Taito, etc
