I noticed something in the OG Playstation's interest

So lately the store I work for has been having a hard time selling our PS1s, we have three up front for sale and roughly about maybe 11 more in the back to be cleaned and processed (So many people have traded them in). I also have noticed the lack of interest in the PS1 as a console lately, a lot of auctions are going really cheap, and the only time a PSOne sells it is usually because of the LCD screen being bundled with it? Are other people noticing this too? Am I just going crazy, or is the "nostalgia wave" completely shifting to the PS2? (Which we always sell once we get them out)

yup, people seem to be glorifying the PS2 at the moment with the whole Y2K D&B aesthetic shit they push on social media. At least it's sparking interest with the newer generation so I'm not complaining.

I personally don't see any reason to own a PS1 anymore since Duckstation is almost perfect and it runs on any potato. But a PS2 still worth getting since PCSX2 is still a russian roulette.

i'd say its more of the convenience that the ps2 provides more than nostalgia.
the ps2 plays ps2 games, ps1 games, reads both types of memory cards, plays both cds and dvds, and has usb ports allowing for homebrew apps to be added and used alongside hard drives being compatible with older ps2 models, which can be modded to store games and almost remove load times entirely when loaded from it.
it does everything that the ps1 does and more.

I think it's probably just as you say, with the nostalgia wave is moving forward.
Like how everyone and their mother were getting Super Nintendos in the 2010s so getting both N64s and NES systems were super easy, but good luck not paying like 80 bucks for Super Metroid cart-only.
Then everyone got N64s during covid and despide that system having like 20 games they were all super expensive because demand went up like crazy.

Yeah absolutely, the PS2 very much blows the PS1 out of the water in terms of features and homebrew, which adds to why our PS2s sell so quickly. I'm sure most people would rather buy a homebrew PS2 memory card than have to make their own using disc swapping and burning their own discs to have to play PS1 games

Yeah I've noticed that myself, we even started selling our Wiis pretty quickly since kids these days are into the whole "Frutiger Aero/Metro" aesthetic, and people around my age (Gen Z born around 2000-2007) are starting to get really nostalgic. It is really interesting to see these sorts of things determine what sells a console

Number of factors to consider.

New TVs these days are shipping without easy connections for the old consoles, nevermind going through the typical upscaler bullshit. Casuals can't get bitten by nostalgia, impulse buy, and easily go grab the component or even composite cables for a PS1 or any old console, and plug them in to every modern TV now.

Playstations themselves are more unreliable with age and use, the drives wear out easily and need to be flipped to properly load discs. That was a way of life before the year 2000, they wore out easily. The console itself isn't really useful in light of being easy to emulate, and requiring mods to get ODE/Flash cart support in the expansion port, which itself wasn't on late units.

For the native games, PS2 does it all. PS3 does it all and can easily hook up to HDMI. People don't really need PS1 hardware.

Niche enthusiasts also have premium priced stuff like Analogue 3D shipping out in a week, giving N64 fans new hardware. SuperStation One is shipping out and is a MisterFPGA console in a PS1 form factor.


I myself wouldn't pay for a PS1 unless it had the expansion port, was cleaned up, and the disc drive was good. Even then I wouldn't throw more than around 50 bucks CAD at it. I am an idiot like that, though. I still have one in the dual shock box from 1998 laying around, and no desire to unpack it or refurbish it.

I mean why get a PS1 nowadays when the PS2 and PS3 can play PS1 games? I mean sure, some PS1 games have compatibility issues with those consoles and you still need the PS1 Memory Card for PS2 but the incompatibility list is not that huge.

Any time I emulate the N64 all I end up usually playing is Mario Kart and Conker

But yeah, that is strange how interest has lapsed for the PS1. I remember there was some fleeting interest in the Genesis from the retro game community (mainly because of new titles getting made), and maybe a little bit thrown towards the Turbografix-16, but both of those were minimal. The Genesis still has the unnecessary reputation of being the "Sonic and sports game console" with little else going for it

It's been kind of like this for quite a few years as far as I know. The first time I went to the retro game convention where I got my Vectrex there was a booth with a literal mountain of PS1 consoles selling for 5$ each. I checked the back inputs on all of the consoles until I found a SCPH-1001. For some reason I have never had any issues with that console and it's why I have Metal Gear Solid for PS1.

Well nowadays I prefer emulator at least I can bring them anytime now on my phone playing ps1 games like Azure Dreams Vandal hearts 2 on the go is so satisfied

PS3's the best way to play PS1 games on official hardware since getting them to display with a component cable via PS2 on modern TV's is a complete crapshoot unless you have an upscaler.

That optical drive on the PS1. I have a 1002 model and have had to replace the lens twice, then the entire motor housing with one from a dead 102 model. THEN replace the lens twice again on the 102 housing. No point getting a ODE when PS2 and PS3 can handle PS1 games easily.

The audio output on the 1000, 3000, & 5000 models are good though but require a bit of cost to get the most of it. By then why spend so much on a PS1 for that other than keeping it all authentic?
And authenticity is not needed to enjoy a video game!
