How come my utensils which are made of wood be called silverware when they aren't made of silver and are not wearing anything?
Also, If I buy all the silverware in the store and smelt them down, can i sell? Silver is pretty valuable nowadays

The term silverware is definitely misleading if you’re expecting actual silver or tiny utensil tuxedos. Originally, it referred to fancy dining tools made of real silver, used by the upper crust to show off during dinner. Over time, the name stuck, even though most of what we call silverware today is stainless steel, plastic, or even wood. So yeah, your wooden fork is technically “silverware,” even if it’s more tree than treasure.

As for smelting down store-bought silverware, unless you’re raiding an antique shop or a royal banquet, most of it isn’t real silver. It’s usually stainless steel, which won’t fetch much unless you’re selling it by the ton. If you do find genuine silver pieces (look for markings like “925” or “Sterling”), then yes, you could melt and sell them but you’d probably make more selling them as collectibles than as scrap.

So in short: silverware isn’t always silver, and smelting it won’t make you rich… but it might make you the most metal person at dinner.

Well at this point ....

Melt down all your forks and spoons and make a silver sword.

You'll have to eat soup with your hands, but you'll have a cool sword!
