Among the many cute as hell games with gorgeous pixel-art that remained in Japan and sadly hasn't got a fan translation is "Milano no Arubaito" (aka Milano's Odd Jobs), which I discovered via one of those "obscure Japanese games"-youtube videos. It is one of those games that make me realize that while I am aware my backlog as a gamer is massive, full of games I likely will never get around to, AND that I may never even get around to this one.... part of what I think being a gamer is about, is not necessarily playing everything you discover and become aware of, but just as must just appreciating it and sharing it with others.

Again, I may never get the time to play this, but I can appreciate its existence, marvel at its spritework, and be grateful I know about it. And then of course share it around with likeminded who may themselves take the time to play it.

Speaking of, an English dubbed rerelease was announced earlier this year, if you wanna play and actually understand the story.

Key tip for getting through your backlog that's helped me: really cut down on browsing gaming forums and social media. Spend more of that time playing games instead.

Yep, this is the first official translation of Hilltop's team. They did great English translation work on Boku no Natsuyasumi 2, Jingle Cats, Dr. Slump and some other obscure gems. Good to see them going official and actually getting paid for their work.

This sounds like a cozy game I could get into! I like the idea of down-to-earth life-sim that isn't just a farming simulator.

Thanks you for the recommendation! ::thank-you

And part of being a gamer is learning Japanese (which is why I learned it way before English).

I don't see how that is part of being a gamer? But I learned Danish way before English, so there's that.
Dude significant part of video game library is Japanese. Back then you would find Japanese games more instead of English (I exclude Americanos and Europeans because world revolves around them) lol.

Welp, guess I know what I'm doing later lol.
The box art alone had me intrigued. It looks adorable.

(I just found out that it was developed by Westone; the team behind "Monster World IV" on Sega Genesis. Now I HAVE to play this.)

Odd Job? why they translate games like shit? the word arubaito means literaly "part time job". So, this game's title is "Milano's part time jobs", period lol.

An odd job is like a part time job you don't plan on doing for very long, or like a small one time job.

They fixed the name for me despite the translation is wrong. I wouldn't wanna play a game about part-time jobs but "odd jobs" sounds interesting. ::thumbsupwario

lol

btw never heard of this one, I just gave it a look. Seems pretty playable with minimal Japanese knowledge. The minigame instructions seem pretty easy to read. Might give this one a try. Its cool we're getting an official translation but if I can't play it on my PS1 I don't really care. ::eggmanlaugh

I think it works. An "odd job" is a job that you don't plan on keeping for an extensive time period.

Also, given that this game is just a simulation/minigame compilation, it just makes perfect sense to call it an "odd job."

Not exactly. An odd job can be full-time job, but arubaito is specifically part-time job. So, all arubaito can be odd jobs but not all jobs can be arubaito.

Then, Milano is working 4 hours a day in the japanese version, but 8 hours a day in the english version? lol

Or she's doing odd jobs for 4 hours of day and there's actually zero contradiction? Bad translations exist but this is fine.

It looks like something that would have come out on the PC FX, kind of a niche product that is barely a real game. Hopefully the dub is optional and you can play with subs, but I won't play it anyway so I guess I have no reason to complain either way.

Then I expect a remake that changes part-time jobs to odd jobs!!!!! lol

I try to prioritize playing obscure, hidden gem type games because they are the ones that don't get much love or attention. Plus, they are the ones likely to surprise me while popular and mainstream games usually provide experiences that are very familiar.

Playing something unique and fresh, or playing another Zelda game? I'll pick the game that's offering something different.
