i hate how thin modern laptops are so much

i swear, theyre SO SMALL AND TINY, THEY LACK THE RELIABILITY OF OLDER LAPTOPS, THE CUSTOMIZABLITY
im gonna use the old and modern thinkpads as an example for this shift towards more uh "petite" technology
lets use the thinkpad X220 to represent the older laptops and the T14 to represent modern laptops
reminder that this comparison isnt about specs, its about the aesthetic and usability from MY perspective (aka the correct perspective)
now lets look at the x220

look at that size, looks at all those ports, look at that thick keyboard, the CPU RAM didnt get soldered yet, dont you just LOVE IT?
this is something that youll NEVER see on modern laptops because of how apple made it popular for a laptop to be extremely skinny, but thats the thing, THICK LAPTOPS ARE JUST THE BEST (reliability and aesthetics wise)
now lets look at the T14

less ports,the keyboard is less likely to last as long as the X220, sure it might still have SOME of the thickness but its still skinny to me, its not as reliable, soldered CPU RAM, will never ever last as long as a X220

do you guys see my point?

my framework 13 is thin and lightweight while feeling real sturdy and reliable and easy to disassemble, only downside is it lack a good trackpoint and there's not enough keys on the keyboard, only 4 ports but they're all USB C and I believe in USB C supremacy

what we miss nowadays is the big fat media center laptops from late 2000s with the most overkill speakers, 3 audio jacks (audio out audio in mic in), DVD drive, two slots for mechanical hard drives and a TV remote hidden in the expresscard slot

the CPU *is* soldered on the X220

if you want transportability you get the thinnest most lightweight thing possible and nothing come close to modern stuff, if you want stationary nothing come close to the big fat things we had in the late 2000s

Even my Victus gaming laptop only has 2 USB Ports, along with a single USB C & HDMI out.
External SSD, cooling pad, Xbox One Controller. Woops I'm at full capacity without buying an adapter.

Nowadays things are meant to be replaced, not kept. The so-called "Manufacturer's Pride" (AKA: the act of making your machine so durable as to get it to outlive many things) is long gone.

I have noticed just how much cheaper and fragile mine got over the years, models and brands.

If they can accelerate user error by making them all the more accident-prone and fragile (both internally and externally) so you'd have to get another one fast, then they absolutely would.

They just need to make it feel powerful enough so you'd buy from the same brand again!

Yes, I just bought a lenovo ideapad slim, and it has soldered ram. I got it so cheap (and new) I didn't mind, but yea, it sucks to not even have the option to upgrade...

I do agree with this to a point but not necessarily 100%. I do have a soft spot for these ~2010 era thinkpads and how they feel like a solid steel slab but honestly, speaking as someone who has been somewhat obsessed with thinkpads and owns about 20-30 of them, I really don't think the modern ones are that bad at all. Built in battery is a bit of a non-issue with the modern power efficiency being good enough that you get basically a day of battery life out of it, and the ports that are missing are pretty much obsolete anyway.
Soldered ram is something I'm somewhat conflicted about. While my gut instinct is that socketed=better, I don't think I've ever had to replace a ram stick on a laptop. Funnily enough btw, soldered ram was a thing in 90's too and I've not had any of those break either. Even if they did, I would consider 20+ years of service good enough to let it finally rest.

The number one thing I do actually still miss is the 7-row keyboard. That layout is the absolute peak of laptop keyboards, it was stupid for them to mess with it and I will die on that hill.

Also, there is one aspect of repairability that the modern thinkpads do way, way better than the old ones in my opinion, and that is how darn easy they are to take apart and service. Just a simple repaste on a x220 means having to churn the guts inside out with screws, tangled wires, plastic clips and ribbon cables in your way all over the place.

My last computer from 2017 was so bad on that regard that I had to buy an USB hub and connect an external one just to use it. So much for portability.

With Laptops, I'm not really interested in portability. It's a nice addition, but for the most part my Laptop stays pulled in on my desk and rarely leaves that spot.

imagine getting a car and everytime your tires are flat you have to buy a NEW car because for some reason the car manufacture made it so you cant just change the tires cuz the way the car is made you have to remove EVERY part just to add new tires
thats basically how modern laptops are :/
