because there's a lot of eva fans who got into it because of Asuka. She's a real jerk but there's fans who like her because they think she's hot. Not into that type of girl myself.

So we could have a generic action game that has no impact in the story or we could date a canon (or totally made up) Eva girl. I think they took the right choice

As others have said, it is ultimately interest that drives these projects forward. The only way to break free of others' whims when it comes to fan translations is not needing them (that is, knowing the target language).
