I found this ad in an Uncle Scrooge comic dated from 1978 two years before Pac-Man...

According to Wikipedia, Casper the Friendly Ghost the animated series was one of the inspirations in the creation of Cutie-Q, an older game which in turn inspired Pac-Man. I wonder if this ad might have gotten to Iwatani somehow and gave him some ideas...very unlikely but it's an interesting coincidence nonetheless.

Now if the alien ate the Ghostly trio, that would be...::drink

Use to love these! I specifically remember one with the Fantastic Four, where Human Torch was "warming up" the pies for everyone in the last panel 😆

Classic, old-school comic book advertising genius. File this right next to the X-Ray Specs, Spy Camera, Weight Gain Powder, and Potato Pellet "Spud Gun."

Dexter's Lab later spoofed these ads, with a "Justice Fruit Pies" short featuring the Justice Friends. I lost my mind when I saw that clip on TV, but also wondered how many kids in the 90s would "get it" 🤔

That Casper looks just like an unfinished Jucika.

They don't really do these kinds of ads anymore because of backlash against advertising junk food directly to kids. Saturday mornings were full of this stuff. But it was fun.

I only heard of those kind of ads in a Dexter's Lab parody

I've never seen this ad before. If it only come out in Disney comics, that'd explain why, I'd only buy Marvel, very, very rarely DC.

God damn it. You just reminded me that they used to have blueberry also. I used to eat the shit out of those when I'd go and buy one with a comic as a child. FUCK!

This reminds me of when my dad found his old comics from when he was a kid. He had a lot of old DC comics. The most memorable part of them were the advertisements. It would kind of catch me off guard seeing superman all of a sudden start talking about twinkies. The crappy novelty toys were also a highlight.
