I don't think anyone will take Microsoft's place in the Gaming Industry.

With Xbox leaving the gaming industry, I don't think another company will try to take it's place.
Maybe Steam will have another go at the Steam Box project, but Valve already have a major foothold in the gaming space.

But in the dedicated console sphere I think it's just going to stay as Sony & Nintendo. Not that I think this is some sort of dire situation though. I mean the 90s console war between Sega and Nintendo was brutal but resulted in fantastic games, and with Microsoft out the way I hope that Sony and Nintendo will concentrate on fighting each other for complete dominance and result on more great game for everyone.

What I don't see happening is another company trying to take Microsoft's place. Look at it this way, if Sony & Nintendo are so strong that not every infinite money Microsoft can beat them; what other company is going to be willing to take up that fight? Amazon have tried and failed, so have Google. I very much doubt any other company has the resources or the balls to even give it a go.

tbh i think sony might also be on its way out as well, and it will probably look like N vs Valve for the foreseeable future unless there is a really big shakeup like idk, samsung or ibm give console making a go for whatever reason AND it turns out to be a smash hit

The future is looking less and less console focused. I think we may see more mini-PCs dedicated to gaming start to crop up released by other companies, maybe even Microsoft themselves.

Sony and Nintendo don't really compete with each other anymore, they kind of cover different markets at this point. Neither one has good competition, which is bad for everyone involved. You've already seen things start to stagnate and dip in quality.

If MS getting out of consoles means they just publish everywhere, that's probably better longterm for them. As far as a new player in the game, they'll need time. When Sony was coming in, people were skeptical because they didn't have a background in games and didn't have Mario or Sonic. When Xbox was coming in, people were like, "durrr it'll bluescreen" or whatever. But you know who no one did that about? NEC.

Sega in the meanwhile :

Sega realizing its today too clusterfucked to get back into the console market :

NEC was kind of in a similar position. A big tech company that wanted to get into the console market. It was their partnership with Hudson that got them to do it. Hudson themselves actually designed many of the chips. Over time Hudson was less and less involved with NEC and is basically what led to their downfall.

I was talking more about dipshit game people than companies themselves. Kids back then didn't have some axe to grind about it, because they weren't really familiar (at least in the US) with NEC. You just went to Toys R Us and look at this cool new thing, that looks fun. Maybe some people on a BBS were saying things, I don't know. I was busy playing Commodore.

I think NEC mostly kept their business in Japan, but they where comparable in size to the other big computer manufacturers like IBM and HP.

Saudi prince already bought EA, why not the XBOX brand? Heck maybe he'll buy Atari and make a new Jaguar. Having oil money must be nice.

Stuff like Steam portable is the future, unless you are Nintendo and have your own IP to sell your console. Even Sony's future looks a bit murky right now.

Lol yeah. Was gonna make a similar comment. I find it funny how so much of it happened in quick succession. Nothing is off tables anymore.

I honestly think that all consoles are on their way out. Microsoft just decided to make a move on this now, rather than wait a few more generations. It really does seem like streaming is the future - and, for many of us, present - of the entertainment industry.

So much hardware has already fallen to the wayside. Few have dedicated home video players anymore, for example. Few have large, full stereo systems. Even fewer have a house phone. And for many people, their mobile phone is a perfectly adequate replacement for all of those devices.

I can see Nintendo still making hardware, as long as it's handheld in some capacity. But Microsoft doesn't need a console at all, now that their cloud streaming app is finally taking off. Some day, PlayStation and Xbox may very well be nothing but apps and streaming services, the Netflix and Disney + of gaming. And, heck, maybe Nintendo will end up this way, too.

That's all a very long-winded way of saying I largely agree with the OP 😆

Sega could easily replace Microsoft. And people would be so excited they would forget that Xbox ever even existed.

I think the only realistic competitor in the current "mainstream gaming" landscape would probably be Valve. They've got ambitions for Steam OS which will end up pushing Linux further as a platform. Apparently they've got another VR hardware project in the works from something I read the other day but not sure of the validity of that. I'd imagine a new iteration of the Steam Deck will be coming. I think the only thing Valve don't have any real focus on is big first party games, but given the size of Steam and holding all of the cards on indies they kind of don't need it.

Genuinely however, in the current gaming landscape, I just can't see any other official third pillar as you've said. Games are too big, too expensive, and there's probably just not enough money in chasing that hardware manufacturer/seller position for any company with the resources and abilities to do so. You're either going to make hardware or make games. You might get the niche company doing both like Atari but there's no world where they fill Microsoft's spot on the stage.

My heart definitely would want a Dreamcast 2 though. Or just a Dreamcast Mini with all of the original features and a willingness to have homebrew be a component of the console.
