I don't think that it's a bad game; I just don't really care for it. For starters, all the enemies blend together for me; I swear to god over half of them have the same "big mech bullet sponge that shoots rockets, cells, and a chain gun" design. those big dog fucks that revive enemies and then spawn in 4 more fodder enemies to protect it? God, I hate those the most. The map-to-map transitions are so shoehorned in and make all the levels one giant annoying maze. I also did not care for any of the explanations, not even the nightdive.

One personal thing that irks me that isn't really the games fault is the unfair treatment to rocket jumping over bunny hopping; neither one is realistic yet for some reason rocket jumping gets treated as an official move but bunny hopping has to get nerfed in every future game. Once again, that's not quake 2's fault, but it still upsets me.

I have around 64 hours in it on Steam and still replay it occasionally but mostly since its a game, I know I can turn off my brain and not think about what i'm doing while listening to music

Me neither, i see it as a glorified tech demo.

Looks very nice sure, but after a few levels it grows very dull.

The low enemy variety, and the environment being industrial zone number whatever one after another, don't help it either.

Maybe it's a generational thing? IDK, maybe it's different when you watched these games grow out of the technical morass of their predecessors. Of all the id games, Quake 2 was one of the ones I enjoyed most because of its fluid gameplay.

id games weren't Bethesda games back then: they were meant as simple, good clean FPS fun and Quake 2 was such a great instance of it that I skipped Quake 3 altogether for lack of single player.

I'm not a fan of Fps games in general. I do enjoy 3rd person though. AND no, its not because I want to see their butts.....

I've owned quake 2 on steam for 10+ years but never really played it, that was until the update. I bought on the switch and fell in love with it. Love the inter connected world, where you can go back and gone secrets you've missed. True, the enemies are a bit spongy and death came easily (for me at least) but with a lot of quick saving I ended up blasting through it.

Counter argument, the OST rules

The fast gameplay combined with the music is such a fun time. Late 90s nostalgia bomb.

I don't know much about Quake but there seems to be a curious disconnect between games plot wise.

1 seems to be very much be doing its own thing (demons, zombified knights, telportals, even an Old One stand in), 2 and 4 are plot related (evil alien race cyborgifies humans to fill in their ranks) and 3 is standalone for all intents and purposes. I'm only familiar with Q3 Arena and that's what I know the franchise for.

Quake 2 was supposed to be It's own thing originally, but ID decided to use the Quake name for brand recognition partway through development.

Essentially what they seem to have ended up with is a sort of quasi-Doom sequel, at least as far as the general plot beats an environments go.

Pretty much, yeah. Carmack was a tech wiz but was never the most artistically minded, that was more Romero's thing, so Quake 2 ended up feeling like a tech-demo retreading of old ground. Conversely, Romero's artistic vision got ahead of what could be feasibly done with the tech without someone like Carmack in Daikatana's case. Both games are often quoted as the reason the two needed each other.

Me neither, I actually think that Quake 2 should've had a different name.

But I think that while KMQuake 2 helped a bit back then the remaster I played on the Switch last year reconciled me with this entry.

Quake III and I are still my favourites.

As someone who played it when it was new I have to agree with you. It looked insanely good for its time and I wouldn’t go so far to call it a bad game, but when you compare it to quake or quake 3 it’s almost funny just how much better these stood the test of time.
I still found the remaster enjoyable, especially the expansions and the multiplayer, but in hindsight it shouldn’t have been part of the series.

But hey, at least it’s not Quake 4.

I disagree, Quake I is still highly technical and Quake III is still a masterclass of how a multiplayer FPS should be like and defined MP FPS for the next decades (yes, even Overwatch and Valoran included).

Maybe they should've said something like Quake: Stroggos War.

Quake is more like a brand about the engine than a series and today it's id Software's multiplayer FPS brand with Live and Champions.

But hey, at least it’s not Quake 4.
What's the deal with 4? It's a much better action FPS than Doom 3 imo.

I think you misunderstood my comment. I think quake 1 and 3 absolutely stomp quake 2 in every way and are still enjoyable to this day. In fact they might be even more fun today when you contrast them with just how bad most first person shooters have become since then.

I thought it was painfully average and the level design philosophy of fps games from that era is imho the absolute low point of the entire genre.

My bad.

I feel that Quake II tried to be more open and story orientated but Goldeneye 64 and Half-Life just did it better and Quake I did gunplay better so it's in between without being great at either.

You're probably right, Prey 2006, Crysis and F.E.A.R. are much better as 2000's FPS
