Howdy! I suppose I should introduce myself considering I've just been commenting on a bunch of random topics lol.
I'm stinkerdoo, also known online as a few dozen other nicknames. Most people call me "Shrimp," "Stinky," and "Catherine"... but honestly you can call me whatever you want, just don't call me late for dinner.
I, like many of you, am a big gaming nerd. My favorite console is the PlayStation 2, the library is just incredible. My favorite portable is probably a tie between DS and PSP, I like both for different reasons. I mostly game on PC or Switch 2 now though, they're just easier than keeping old hardware and adapters plugged in all the time.
I am a biiiiig time rhythm gamer. My favorite series is a tie between Beatmania IIDX (It's too cool!!) and Pop'n Music. I've played probably any rhythm game you can think of, so I'm always down for discussion!! I also love platformers, puzzle games, and roguelikes. Some of my favorites include Jet Set Radio Future, Nuclear Throne, Picross, Katamari Damacy, and Portal.
I love music!!!!!! My favorite album of all time is Planet DOB by Date of Birth, but I listen to a ton of genres, here's some other picks of mine: µ-Ziq - Lunatic Harness, The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute, A Tribe Called Quest - We Got It From Here..., boa - Get There, aaaaaand Renard - Trauma.
I'm also a musician and programmer, both as a lil hobby. I mostly just like fartin around making experimental electronic music for weirdos like me, and then fart around some more and make crappy little games/apps for weirdos like me. It's my life goal to gid gud enough at music and game development to make an arcade rhythm game of my own :>
I'll leave this post with a bit of a Thinker for ya, because I'd like to get to know you guys too.
What is a game or mechanic that drew you back into retro gaming? What gave you the biggest "they don't make 'em like they used to..." moment?
For me, I think that had to be Disaster Report 2 AKA Raw Danger. I played it for the first time a year or two ago, and it completely blew my mind. Something about how Disaster Report 2 needed to be creative with the limitations set by the PS2 to achieve its atmosphere really resonated with me. To most people, it just looks old. But to me, it blows my mind how rich the world feels. It was the first time in YEARS that I played an adventure game, saw a place in the distance, and genuinely went "woah I hope I get to go there later!!" I think the last time I felt that was when I played Half-Life 2...
Despite the game definitely having slower parts, it feels like it has almost no filler, and I doubt there was even space on the disc for filler if they wanted to add some. It made me realize, even though games are technically better than ever, we lost so much with OG arcade designers either passing away or leaving the industry. The arcade-era programmers and designers truly knew something about raw fun in video games that was lost to time. Also capitalism.
Thank you all for making this forum so inviting!! Hope to see y'all soon!
