Howdy! I suppose I should introduce myself considering I've just been commenting on a bunch of random topics lol.
I'm stinkerdoo, also known online as a few dozen other nicknames. Most people call me "Shrimp," "Stinky," and "Catherine"... but honestly you can call me whatever you want, just don't call me late for dinner.

I, like many of you, am a big gaming nerd. My favorite console is the PlayStation 2, the library is just incredible. My favorite portable is probably a tie between DS and PSP, I like both for different reasons. I mostly game on PC or Switch 2 now though, they're just easier than keeping old hardware and adapters plugged in all the time.

I am a biiiiig time rhythm gamer. My favorite series is a tie between Beatmania IIDX (It's too cool!!) and Pop'n Music. I've played probably any rhythm game you can think of, so I'm always down for discussion!! I also love platformers, puzzle games, and roguelikes. Some of my favorites include Jet Set Radio Future, Nuclear Throne, Picross, Katamari Damacy, and Portal.

I love music!!!!!! My favorite album of all time is Planet DOB by Date of Birth, but I listen to a ton of genres, here's some other picks of mine: µ-Ziq - Lunatic Harness, The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute, A Tribe Called Quest - We Got It From Here..., boa - Get There, aaaaaand Renard - Trauma.

I'm also a musician and programmer, both as a lil hobby. I mostly just like fartin around making experimental electronic music for weirdos like me, and then fart around some more and make crappy little games/apps for weirdos like me. It's my life goal to gid gud enough at music and game development to make an arcade rhythm game of my own :>

I'll leave this post with a bit of a Thinker for ya, because I'd like to get to know you guys too.
What is a game or mechanic that drew you back into retro gaming? What gave you the biggest "they don't make 'em like they used to..." moment?

For me, I think that had to be Disaster Report 2 AKA Raw Danger. I played it for the first time a year or two ago, and it completely blew my mind. Something about how Disaster Report 2 needed to be creative with the limitations set by the PS2 to achieve its atmosphere really resonated with me. To most people, it just looks old. But to me, it blows my mind how rich the world feels. It was the first time in YEARS that I played an adventure game, saw a place in the distance, and genuinely went "woah I hope I get to go there later!!" I think the last time I felt that was when I played Half-Life 2...
Despite the game definitely having slower parts, it feels like it has almost no filler, and I doubt there was even space on the disc for filler if they wanted to add some. It made me realize, even though games are technically better than ever, we lost so much with OG arcade designers either passing away or leaving the industry. The arcade-era programmers and designers truly knew something about raw fun in video games that was lost to time. Also capitalism.

Thank you all for making this forum so inviting!! Hope to see y'all soon! ::peacemario::thank-you

Welcome to the forum!

I'm not sure if it counts as retro, but I always appreciate how much effort and detail was put into the 2010 video game Deadly Premonition. Given that almost every named character has their own 24 hour cycle that can adapt to changes in the story, and how almost every character gets their own quest or questline to help flesh out their personality and give you an idea of their life in Greenvale. It's a level of detail that most might not even pick up on if they just focus on the story.

Anyway, hope you have a good time here!

Hi Stinkerdoo! But i guess i will be calling you shrimp, since it's my favorite. Also nice to have another Play Station 2 fan around here too! Tho im not a big fan rhytm games. Also like music, tho idk how to start making my own, would be cool if you gave a tip or two.
What gave you the biggest "they don't make 'em like they used to..." moment?
Honestly, not surem i just like older games in genral cuz back in the day everybody was doing their own styles for their games in stead of 4k ultrarealistic graphics. Another thing i like is how everybody was trying to get around the console limitations. Like tapping into ps2 extra memory that was used for ps1 games and stuff like that.

Welcome to the site!!! :D
Nice hobby — being a programmer and a musician. I wish I knew how to do stuff like that :P

About rhythm games… I’m not really into them XD
But Parappa the Rapper, Friday Night Funkin, and… okay… maybe anime Guitar Hero ::pipo-monkey-eating

What gave you the biggest "they don't make 'em like they used to..." moment?
Hmm… and about that question…
Really interesting. I started my “retrogamer life” pretty early. I was born in 2005, and I had a very close cousin who was always playing on his PSP or on his PC, and I’d just sit there watching him play. Then, if I remember correctly, around 2013 I got my PRECIOUS BABY PSP, THE BEST HANDHELD/CONSOLE IN THE ENTIRE FRICKING UNIVERSE………
Sorry, I lost my composure ::eggmanlaugh::eggmanlaugh

So yeah, I was always playing Crash Bandicoot, Klonoa, and Spider-Man on PS1 (my absolute favorites in the universe :,v). And without even realizing it, I never thought of those games as “old”. Even today that still amazes me.
Even Dragon Quest, which I finished recently, didn’t feel “ugly” or “dated” to me. But MAN… comparing a game from 1986 to one from 2025 is wild XDDDD
So that’s how my retrogaming journey started: completely by accident. Nowadays, for me, a game is just a game. I play pretty much everything — I just haven’t played more because I AM NOT THE VIDEO GAME WIZARD.
And time isn’t always on my side either XD
Balancing study, work, and free time is hard (and honestly, I don’t even study properly 😭)

Aaaaaanyway, this is probably the longest welcome message I’ve ever written.
Welcome to the site, and sorry for sending a whole BIBLE XD

If you're just starting out, the biggest piece of advice I can give is to just download a DAW and make a ton of crap.
Make things quickly, learn how to be "finished" with something, and just move on to the next thing. You have plenty of time down the road to become a perfectionist, spend your first couple years exclusively having as much fun as possible by exploring what you and your DAW can achieve.

Listen closely to your favorite music and copy their homework. If you like the sound of the drums, see if you can recreate what makes them good. If you like the way a melody sounds, remake it and try to figure out what makes it good. You will learn a TON just by asking "how did they make this?"

Don't be afraid of music theory. You may not realize it, but you probably already know a lot of music theory without even realizing. All music theory is, is a way to put audio into words for other people to understand. Like the words "chords," "melody," even "tempo." Do not deny yourself knowledge just because it's tied to "music theory."

There are no "right" or "wrong" answers in music. If something sounds good to your ears, then you're right! If you like using a specific program, everybody else that says it sucks can kick rocks! Your music = your rules.

Another thing i like is how everybody was trying to get around the console limitations
Surely you've seen this video, but in case you haven't:

I approve ::dkapproves

I was always playing Crash Bandicoot, Klonoa, and Spider-Man
Once again, I approve ::dkapproves:loldog
I recently played through Klonoa again, I think it was my 2nd or 3rd time beating it, and I'm always blown away by how beautiful it is. And that MUSIC!!!!
I believe the first time I played Klonoa was also on PSP :) funny that we have that in common!
I still have to play through Klonoa 2 though, it's been on my list for a very long time.
I'd highly recommend Tomba if you haven't played it yet! It always reminded me of Klonoa.

Bible appreciated! Thank you for the very warm welcome! ::peacemario

Thanks for the recommendation XD I’m gonna add TOMBA to my list.

Finishing Klonoa years after I first played it felt like completing a quest I’d been carrying for years…
and man, it’s such a short game?
But honestly, when you’re a kid it feels like a freaking RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 XDDD::peacemario ::smug
